Bookies hot under the collar as heatwave hopes soar
BOYLE Sports will be sweating on its odds this summer after a surge in bets backed a long-standing temperature record to be scorched in Ireland.
Recent data released by Met Éireann says last month was the fourth hottest June on record, while the latest forecasts indicate we could be basking in hot sunshine this week as a European heatwave starts to leave its mark on the country.
With the public bracing itself for a hot spell and thermometers tipped to threaten the 30°C mark, the odds on the highest temperature ever being clocked in the country before the year is out have now been slashed into just 4/1 (from 12/1 at the start of the year).
Lawrence, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said:
“If the forecasts hold up, we could be in for a real scorcher of a summer and punters are getting all the more hot on the prospect of the all-time record being left in the shade."
Bettors eyeing-up a summer payday are now relying on the mercury going past the whopping 33.3°C clocked at Kilkenny Castle in 1887, which still holds pride of place in the Irish history books.
