The Eurovision Song Contest 2024 is set to be the 68th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It is scheduled to take place in Malmö, Sweden, following the country's victory at the 2023 contest with the song ‘Tattoo’ by Loreen.
It’s now approaching 28 years since Ireland last won the Eurovision. Despite this long drought, Ireland are one of the 2 most successful countries in the history of the Eurovision with 7 wins. Those victories came between 1970 and 1996. Sweden equalled Ireland’s total of 7 song contest wins with their victory in 2023.

Ireland are 14/1 to win Eurovision 2024 according to the latest Eurovision odds at BoyleSports, having been cut from 40/1 following Bambi Thug's victory with Doomsday Blue in the Eurosong Contest last Friday. This suggests that Ireland have a 6.7% chance of winning this year’s Eurovision Song Contest based on the implied probability of those odds.
As a result of this massive odds cut Ireland look like they could be set for an appearance in the final, and potentially even challenge for the title in Sweden this May.
Who Will Represent Ireland in Eurovision 2024?
Ireland will be represented by Bambi Thug following victory in the Ireland Eurosong Contest last Friday Night with the song "Doomsday Blues". Cuntry Ray Robinson was born in Macroom County Cork (Bambi Thug is the performing name) initially trained as a ballet dancer and studied musical theatre.
Bambi likes to combine and mix different musical genres coining a unique term, "ouija-pop", out of disdain for being put into one genre. Robinson's music has been inspired by various subjects, like breakups, witchcraft, and drug addiction.
What Is the Ireland's Eurovision Song?
The name of Ireland's song for Eurovision 2024 is Doomsday Blues which will be performed by Bambi Thug. The song won Eurosong 2024 with 34 points on 26 January 2024, which means that it will be the Irish entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, to be held in Malmö, Sweden.
Cuntry co-wrote the song with Olivia Cassy Brooking, Sam Matlock and Tyler Ryder. The song has a distinctive style mixing alt-rock, pop and jazz. An "electro-metal breakdown" dealing with topics of heartbreak, deception and the pain of unrequited love creates a "hard-hitting" and "explosive" song. This song certainly packs a unique punch.
Eurovision Style
The Eurovision is arguably best known for its distinctive style and "bold" music ternary, Hard Rock Hallelujah won for Finland in 2006, and Dancing Lasha Tumbai by Verka Serduchka was runner-up for Ukraine in 2007. However, for every Hallelujah and Lasha, there is also a Dustin The Turkey who failed to qualify for the Grand Final for Ireland in 2008 with Irlande Douze Pointe.
Ireland have been criticised as "overly safe" and "forgetting the Eurovision way" in recent years and as shown by Ireland's entry in 2008, it remains a fine line between "brilliant winner" and "abject failure" when you try to thread the Eurovision needle it can go one way or another.
Doomsday Blues is certainly not a "safe" pick and the initial reaction on Social Media from the Irish Eurovision Fandom is that this song could be a certified hit come May. However, I remain uncertain on whether or not this is optimism bias and as I said above, the line between "hit" and "failure" can be very fine.

How Many Times Have Ireland Won The Eurovision?
Ireland has won the Eurovision a record 7 times. They hold that record with Sweden who also have 7 Eurovision Song Contest victories.
Ireland first competed in the Eurovision in 1965 with the first winner coming with Dana’s ‘All Kinds of Everything’ in 1970.
It would be another decade before Ireland were victorious again courtesy of Johnny Logan’s performance of ‘What’s Another Year’ in 1980. Logan would go on to win his 2nd Eurovision for Ireland in 1987 with ‘Hold Me Now’.
Then came the 1990s, the Golden Age of Irish success at the Eurovision Song Contest. Ireland won the competition four out of five years between 1992 and 1996. In 1992 it was Linda Martin with ‘Why Me?’, 1993 saw Niamh Kavanagh’s ‘In Your Eyes’ come out victorious and Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan performed the iconic ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids’ for 3 in a row.
The song ‘The Voice’ sung by Eimear Quinn in 1996 was Ireland’s 4th song contest win of the decade and 7th in total. Ireland haven’t had much luck since though with the country's best finish being 8th place with Jedward singing Lipstick back in 2011.
Ireland has failed to qualify for the finals since Ryan O’Shaughnessy’s ‘Together’ came 16th in 2018.
