If you’ve been wondering ‘How does qualification for Euro 2024 work?’ then you are in the right place as we explain all you need to know!

Euro 2024 Qualifying Explained

Euro 2024 qualification began on the 23rd of March 2023 and will end on the 26th of March 2024 when the Play-off Finals for the tournament will be contested.

Euro 2024, the main tournament, will begin on the 14th of June 2024 and run until the Euro 2024 Final on the 14th of July 2024.

How Many Teams Qualify For The Euros?

Only 24 teams can qualify for the Euro 2024 tournament and the hosts, Germany, gain automatic qualification which means that only 23 spots are available from the Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Euro 2024 Qualifying Draw

The Euro 2024 Qualifying groups were drawn on the 9th of October 2022 in Frankfurt, Germany. The draw was seeded based on the 2022-23 Nations League rankings so you will notice that each group has 2-3 ‘stronger’ teams that will be favoured to qualify from their groups over the other teams in their group.

While the teams with the higher seeding will generally have a better chance at qualification for Euro 2024, that doesn’t mean that qualification is guaranteed as we have seen many occasions in the past where ‘bigger’ teams have failed to qualify for the European Championship finals.

Teams Taking Part In Euro 2024 Qualifiers

53 of the 55 UEFA countries will take part in the Euro 2024 Qualifiers. The two that aren’t are Germany, because they are hosts as mentioned earlier, and Russia who are currently serving a suspension from UEFA competitions.

The rest of the 53 UEFA countries were split up into 10 qualifying groups. Seven of those groups contain five teams while the other three groups contain six teams.

How To Qualify For Euro 2024

For automatic qualification for Euro 2024 a country needs to finish in the top two places in their qualifying group.

Euro 2024 Play-offs

After the group qualification stage is over there are still three more qualification places on offer for Euro 2024. Those three places will be decided by play-offs based on performances in the 2022-23 Nations League.

The group winners of Leagues A, B and C will qualify for a spot in the play-offs but if they have already qualified for the tournament through the Euro 2024 group qualifiers then the next best ranked teams in their league will be awarded a play-off spot.

In a recent post we previewed the Euro 2024 betting market and analysed the chances of each of the top teams ahead of the qualification process.
