Could not have found things easier when winning a St Leger trial at Doncaster last time out and if he continues to improve, Andrew Balding’s charge may head back to Town Moor for the Classic itself. A first dip into handicap company will be a good test of such ambitions and an initial mark of 88 might not be enough to contain him, even in a strong looking field.

14:25 ALICE KEPPEL FILLIES’ CONDITIONS STAKES – WILD BLOSSOM @ 7/4
A 300,000gns purchase for Wathnan Racing , this daughter of Mehmas made a huge impression when bolting up by 10 lengths on her Carlisle debut. Karl Burke’s filly was then prominent for a long way in the Queen Mary before just falling back late on and looks worth another chance at a lower level here.

15:00 ROLLS-ROYCE OAK TREE STAKES – FLORA OF BERMUDA @ 7/2
Balding’s five-year-old has to give weight away to all but one of her rivals but could be up to the task to give James Doyle and Wathnan a quick double. Flora Of Bermuda battled hard to land the Group Three Summer Stakes at York last time out over six furlongs and was as strong at the line as anywhere, so could improve for a first try at seven furlongs.

15:35 VEUVE CLICQUOT MOLECOMB STAKES – PERSHAADA @ 4/1
Was a comfortable winner of a course-and-distance novice event in May and did her reputation no harm at all in a strong renewal of the Queen Mary , finishing a two-and-a-half-length fourth behind Victorious . Everything that has come out of that race has boosted the form, with runner-up Senorita Bonita landing a Group Two , plus two Listed winners and a couple of scorers at lower grades.
Against that backdrop, Pershaada’s effort, keeping on over on the stands side when the action was unfolding away from her, is worth marking up and she looks the one to be on in this prestigious Group Three.

16:10 VISIT QATAR SUSSEX STAKES – BOW ECHO (NAP) @ 6/5
It has not been smooth sailing for the Classic generation since the summer opened up to all-aged affairs but George Boughey’s stable star can strike a blow to rebalance the books. Aside from Constitution River in the Eclipse , three-year-olds have struggled to make an impact so far, with the Falmouth , Pretty Polly at the Curragh , the July Cup and the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes all landed by older horses.
No one is saying the Classic bunch are duds just yet, though, particularly after Benvenuto Cellini held up well at Ascot in the King George - and in Bow Echo , we might just be talking about the best of the lot. He was as good a winner of the 2000 Guineas as you could have wished, streaking home two and three-quarters of a length in front of Gstaad .
While Aidan O’Brien’s runner-up subsequently impressed in the Irish equivalent and then narrowed the deficit to a short head at Royal Ascot in the St James’s Palace Stakes , Bow Echo had to overcome early trouble in running and then probably hit the front too soon in the straight.
The fight he showed to hold off Gstaad was pleasing and while there is clearly not too much between them, our selection might prove better suited to the track here in Sussex.
