Punters Pile in on Mullins Masterclass at Punchestown

Willie backed to land final punch in trainers’ title tussle

Willie Mullins is a hot odds-on favourite with BOYLE Sports to put the finishing touches on yet another Irish trainers’ championship as the Punchestown Festival gets underway on Tuesday. Mullins could dominate proceedings from the outset with his Closutton stable set to boast six of the eight favourites on Tuesday’s opening card as the curtain comes down on the jumps season in Ireland.

Among his leading hopes is Kitzbuhel (11/8), who arrives on the back of victory in Cheltenham’s Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase, while Il Etait Temps (13/8) also brings Festival-winning form to the table having landed the Champion Chase in March.

With four of the five runners in the feature Champion Chase on Tuesday, Mullins’ stronghold in the markets means he is now a 1/20 shot with BOYLE Sports to keep Gordon Elliott at bay in the hunt for the trainers’ title, even though the latter started the week with a slender lead in the prize money table.

Elliott remains an 8/1 underdog to overhaul his great rival in the race, although the County Meath handler will look to make an early statement with El Cairos, the 2/1 favourite for the Grade 1 Champion Novice Hurdle on the opening day.

Brian O’Keeffe, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said:

“Gordon Elliott has some leading fancies at Punchestown this week, but the markets point firmly towards Mullins mania putting paid to his chances. With six of the eight favourites on day one alone, confidence is sky high that Willie will rack up the winners and seal the title in style.”
