Mullins Holds Gold Cup Aces in Punchestown Title Battle

Goldcup2018

Trainer turns the screw on Gordon Elliott.

Willie Mullins could move even closer to the Irish trainers’ title on Wednesday if the betting for the day two feature at the Punchestown Festival is on the money.

The Closutton handler is bidding to fend off Gordon Elliott in the race for the bragging rights, with both rival trainers amongst the winners on the opening day. But Mullins stole the headlines with a Tuesday treble to put himself in pole position, including Il Etait Temps landing the feature Champion Chase.

Attention now turns to Wednesday’s Punchestown Gold Cup, where Mullins is responsible for four of the five runners, underlining his strong position in the race to be crowned champion trainer yet again.

In what promises to be a fascinating head-to-head, Mullins’ stable stars Gaelic Warrior and Fact To File are set to lock horns in the day two showpiece, with Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Gaelic Warrior now an odds-on 4/5 shot with BOYLE Sports, against the 13/8 about his JP McManus-owned stablemate.

Last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Inothewayurthinkin, trained by Gavin Cromwell, is priced at 9/1 and represents the only threat to Mullins’ claiming the top prize in the race.

Brian O’Keeffe, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said:

“The Punchestown Gold Cup is offering up one of the clashes of the season as two Willie Mullins-trained stars clash in the day two feature. Fact To File may have freshness on his side, but punters are backing Gaelic Warrior to stamp himself as this season’s standout staying chaser with another huge performance.”
