We’re focusing on the Classic action from Doncaster in this Saturday’s ITV racing tips, with the St Leger the showpiece event on a stellar card.
Armchair punters can also look forward to Group Two fare from Town Moor with the Champagne Stakes and the Park Stakes, plus the fiercely competitive Portland Handicap for sprinters.
13:15 Tip
13:45 DONCASTER – BREACHER @ 6/1
Joint-trainer William Muir struggled to contain his enthusiasm after the Cracksman colt’s winning debut at Salisbury , suggesting he compares favourably to his King George and Coronation Cup-winning former stable star Pyledriver.
Breacher came up a little short when stepped up in class for Sandown’s Solario Stakes , but he did seem green when coming under pressure and briefly looked like dropping out of the picture entirely, so it was encouraging to see him stay on at the death to be beaten just a length into third place. He should be a bit sharper for his third start in the Champagne Stakes and looks good value to at least hit the frame.
14:20 Tip
14:20 DONCASTER – TOCA MADERA @ 11/1
Plenty of familiar names go to post for the Portland , in which the vote goes to David O’Meara’s charge.
Toca Madera bolted up from the front at this venue in June and the handicapper did not miss him, handing him an 11lb rise from 86 to 97. Results have been a little mixed since, but good efforts in competitive sprint handicaps at Goodwood and York suggest he is capable of winning again off his current mark if things fall his way.
14:55 Tip
14:55 DONCASTER – MORE THUNDER @ 11/10
The William Haggas-trained five-year-old has been knocking on the door at the top table this season, filling the runner-up spot in both the BOYLE Sports Lockinge and Queen Anne Stakes and most recently finishing a close-up fifth in the Prix Jacques le Marois.
More Thunder has a little less on his plate dropping down in grade for the Park Stakes and this seven-furlong distance is probably his sweet spot.
15:35 Tip
15:35 DONCASTER – ENCELADUS (NAP) @ 2/1
A strong field of 11 runners is set to chase Classic glory on Town Moor and many eyes will be on Aidan O’Brien’s Christmas Day , who bids to become the first horse since Reference Point in 1987 to complete the Derby-St Leger double . However, as was the case with many of those Epsom heroes that have come before, the suspicion is that Christmas Day peaked on the first Saturday in June, whereas Enceladus remains on an upward curve.
Few would have had Joseph O’Brien’s colt down as a potential Classic winner when he won a Cork maiden by a head on his seasonal debut in April , but he thrived when stepped up to a mile and a half for the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot and proved his Group-class potential when following up in Goodwood’s Gordon Stakes .
Everything about Enceladus suggests a mile and three-quarters should be right up his street and with title-chasing Billy Loughnane in the plate and cheek pieces applied, it would be a surprise if he is not heavily involved in the finish.
16:15 Tip
16:15 DONCASTER – BULLET POINT @ 4/1
After posting a couple of victories in each of the past two seasons, this likeable gelding deserves to get off the mark this term following rock-solid runner-up efforts at Ascot and York over the past month.
