The Group One Goodwood Cup is the main event on day one and features among five contests covered live by ITV, all of which are included in our Glorious Goodwood tips for Tuesday .

13:50 CHESTERFIELD CUP HANDICAP – YABHER @ 6/1
William Haggas’ gelding was strongly fancied for the John Smith’s Cup at York but was held up at the back of the pack and was never on terms. Yabher barely had a race there but the time before had bolted in over the course and distance he will face in the Chesterfield Cup.
Hammered 12lb by the handicapper for that six-length win, he has been dropped a couple after York and may resume winning ways.

14:25 VINTAGE STAKES – HAFFNER @ 7/4
May have only won a maiden on Newmarket’s July course but he did so in the manner of a typical Aidan O’Brien future Classic contender. The Justify colt, who hails from the same family as champion stayer Order Of St George , had finished an eye-catching second to stablemate Abraham Lincoln on his debut and, in true style for one from Ballydoyle , took a big step forward next time.
He beat a well-bred newcomer of Charlie Appleby’s at HQ and it is that stable which provides the big danger again, this time in Al Hudaiba. The latter is unbeaten in races he has completed, after getting rid of his jockey at Yarmouth , and beat Abraham Lincoln by a short head in the Superlative Stakes.
However, O’Brien will obviously have a very good idea of how that form relates to Haffner and it probably says a lot that he only made this one entry for the Group Two Vintage Stakes.

15:00 LENNOX STAKES – QIRAT @ 7/2
Ralph Beckett’s five-year-old caused a huge shock in the Sussex Stakes 12 months ago when winning at 150/1. Qirat has been a bit in and out since but, with a first-time tongue tie on, he got back to winning ways at York last month when once again allowed to dominate in the Criterion Stakes.
That was his first run over seven furlongs in almost 10 months and he can be ridden more forcefully over that trip. As long as Qirat does not get drawn into an early battle for the lead, you at least know he will be staying on strongly at the finish, just like he was on the Knavesmire recently.

15:35 GOODWOOD CUP – SCANDINAVIA (NAP) @ 10/11
Having worn down Trawlerman to wrestle away the Gold Cup crown at Ascot , it is difficult to see how that elder statesman can turn the tables on O’Brien’s star four-year-old in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup. The two appear to be head and shoulders clear of the rest of the current crop of stayers and official ratings tell the same story.
Scandinavia is rated just 1lb clear of Trawlerman after benefiting from a perfect Ryan Moore ride at Ascot , but there is another 6lb drop to the next best in Roger Varian’s Rahiebb , who was only a neck behind our selection in the St Leger but then 24 lengths adrift of the big two in the Gold Cup.
O’Brien’s Justify colt won the Goodwood Cup last year when only a three-year-old, which was no mean feat – in fact, the last one from the Classic generation to win the race before that was a certain Stradivarius , who went on to land four straight renewals. Unbeaten in six since being fitted with cheekpieces, Scandinavia looks like being another dominant force on the staying scene for some time to come.

16:10 SHAKER HANDICAP – TWILIGHT CALLS @ 8/1
This five-furlong dash will be run at a hectic pace, which could set things up for Richard Spencer’s rejuvenated eight-year-old, who loves to be delivered with a late charge and has scored at Sandown and Newmarket recently using those tactics under red-hot rider Saffie Osborne.
