County Hurdle Tips: The Jockey Switch That Points to This Horse In 2.00pm Race

2025 Cheltenham Stayers Hurdle

Friday 13 March 2026  |  14:00  |  Cheltenham New Course  |  2m 179y  |  Premier Handicap (Class 1)

Twenty-four runners. A 24-runner field full of unexposed handicappers, shrewd trainers, and more angles than any other race at the Cheltenham Festival. The County Hurdle is one of the great puzzles of jump racing's biggest week — and in 2026 there is one piece of information that cuts through the noise more cleanly than anything else.

Paul Townend has chosen to ride Karbau over stablemate Murcia. At the Cheltenham Festival, that kind of jockey switch from the world's best jump jockey is not made lightly. Townend has sat on both horses. He knows what they feel like at home. When he picks one over the other in the County Hurdle, that choice carries more weight than any form reading.

But the County Hurdle is never straightforward. Nine of the last ten winners were trained by either Willie Mullins or Dan Skelton — and Skelton's unexposed novice Sinnatra is generating significant excitement on his handicap debut. The defending champion Absurde is back for Mullins. And lurking in a 24-runner field, there is always the horse nobody is talking about.

County Hurdle Key Trends Every Punter Should Know

The County Hurdle has well-established patterns built over decades. Apply these filters before backing anything in the market:

  • The Two-Yard Monopoly: Nine of the last ten winners were trained by either Willie Mullins (six) or Dan Skelton (four). No other trainer has won this race since 2021. In 2026, Mullins saddles Karbau, Murcia, and Absurde. Skelton runs Sinnatra and Tellherthename.
  • Age: 20 of the past 27 winners were aged five or six. Nine of the last 12 winners were in that age bracket. The 2026 field is packed with five and six-year-olds — the trends strongly favour the younger, less exposed end of the market.
  • Official Rating: Nine of the last 12 winners were rated between 134 and 141. Six of the last ten were in the 137-141 band specifically. Horses carrying big weights off high marks rarely feature — the sweet spot is mid-range handicappers with room to improve.
  • Weight: Nine of the last 12 winners carried 11st 3lb or less. Two of the exceptions were trained by Willie Mullins — who has a history of getting big-weight winners home in this race.
  • Ex-Flat Background: 14 of the past 21 winners came from an ex-Flat background. Speed on good ground matters in the County Hurdle and horses with a Flat pedigree consistently outperform their hurdles-only counterparts.
  • Recent Form: At least one top-three finish in the last two starts, 8/10. The race rewards horses in form — not those being freshened up after a poor run.
  • Market: Eight of the last 12 winners were returned at 10/1 or bigger. Only three favourites have won in the last 12 renewals. The County Hurdle is a punter's race — value hunters who look beyond the market leaders are consistently rewarded.
  • Novices: There have been nine winning novices since 1996. The County Hurdle regularly rewards unexposed handicap debutants — which is exactly the profile of Sinnatra in 2026.

The trends shortlist for 2026 based on those filters: Karbau, Sinnatra, and Sixandahalf. The Townend switch adds an extra layer of conviction to Karbau's claims.

Karbau

Karbau – 7/2 | Trainer: W.P. Mullins | Jockey: Paul Townend | Form: 41033-2 | Tip

The jockey switch is the story. Paul Townend has ridden Murcia — a Grade 1 winner who the BOYLE Sports team fancy for this race — and he has chosen Karbau instead. At the Cheltenham Festival, that decision from the world's leading jump jockey is the single most important piece of information available. Townend does not make that switch without good reason.

Karbau was placed twice in Grade 1 novice hurdles last spring — at Aintree and Punchestown — which means he is a graded horse dropping into handicap company. His seasonal reappearance at Naas in January produced a career-best RPR of 156 when second in a Grade 3, having been off the track for nine months. The Racing Post made him their selection, noting he is entitled to come on significantly for that first run back.

He is six years old, ex-Flat, Irish-trained, and has Townend in the saddle. He ticks every box the trends demand. The fact that he is dropping into a handicap off a mark that does not fully reflect his graded form is the final piece of the puzzle.

The concern: He carries 11st 8lb — above the 11st 3lb weight threshold that has tripped up most County Hurdle runners historically. Mullins has overcome that trend before, but it is worth noting.

Verdict: Our tip. The Townend switch and the graded form in a handicap make him the standout.

Sinnatra

Sinnatra – 5/1 | Trainer: Dan Skelton | Jockey: Harry Skelton | Form: 4-22131 | Each-Way

The most exciting horse in the race on an upward curve. Sinnatra is an unexposed six-year-old novice making his handicap debut off a mark of 133 — a figure that could be significantly lower than his true ability. He won at Sandown on good ground in fast time before finishing behind Act Of Innocence at Huntingdon in a step up in trip and class. That Huntingdon run was his only slightly disappointing effort and the drop back to 2 miles here looks ideal.

Dan Skelton has won the County Hurdle four times and knows exactly how to get a horse into this race off a lenient mark. Harry Skelton has ridden Sinnatra in all five of his starts for the yard and won the County Hurdle twice himself. The combination of an unexposed novice, a workable handicap mark, and the most successful British trainer in this race's recent history is compelling.

The concern: His mark of 133 is at the lower end of the OR range that has produced winners. He was slightly below expectations at Huntingdon last time, though the step up in trip was likely the reason. Handicap debut is always an unknown.

Verdict: Our each-way selection. Unexposed Skelton novice on handicap debut — exactly the profile the County Hurdle rewards. With 24 runners and six places on offer, the each-way case is excellent.

Murcia

Murcia – 5/1 | Trainer: W.P. Mullins | Jockey: Danny Mullins | Form: 2814-34 | BOYLE Sports Team Tip

The BOYLE Sports team fancy Murcia and the case is not without merit. She was a Grade 1 winner at Aintree as a juvenile last term and has not been disgraced in two competitive contests this season. Her fourth-place finish behind Bowensonfire at the Dublin Racing Festival was noted — the Racing Post flagged it as significant that Townend has now switched away from her to Karbau.

That switch is the problem. Mullins has seen both horses at home and made his choice. Danny Mullins takes the ride on Murcia in Townend's absence, which is still a strong booking — but the vacancy left by Townend is impossible to ignore. She may just be the type to save her best for spring ground, as the BOYLE Sports team suggest, but the handicapper has not been kind with a mark of 142.

The concern: Paul Townend has switched to her stablemate. That is the most significant negative in the race. Her mark of 142 also puts her above the OR sweet spot that has defined most County Hurdle winners.

Verdict: The BOYLE Sports Team tip and a live contender — but preference is Karbau given the Townend switch.

Absurde

Absurde – 10/1 | Trainer: W.P. Mullins | Jockey: Mr P.W. Mullins | Form: 6P41/31-

The defending champion. Absurde won this race at 12/1 in 2024 for Willie Mullins and Patrick Mullins, coming from off the pace to score in the manner of a horse with plenty in hand. He has not run since January — his form figures show a blank after a third-place finish — but connections are clearly pointing him at a repeat bid.

The precedent for defending champions in this race is mixed, but Mullins has a habit of producing horses fit and ready for a specific Festival target. Patrick Mullins in the saddle adds a tactical dimension — he knows this horse inside out and knows what it takes to win the County Hurdle.

The concern: He carries 11st 13lb — the heaviest weight in the race and well above the 11st 3lb threshold. He is eight years old, outside the preferred age profile. His form this season has been limited. He is asking punters to take a lot on trust.

Verdict: Fascinating each-way claims given the defending champion status and the Mullins record, but the weight and age work against him.

Joyeuse

Joyeuse – 12/1 | Trainer: Nicky Henderson | Jockey: Nico de Boinville | Form: 69-2294

Won a valuable 2-mile handicap hurdle at Newbury last season and has been gradually working her way back down the weights since. Nicky Henderson and Nico de Boinville is a combination that knows how to win at the Cheltenham Festival and Joyeuse showed better signs at Ascot last time, suggesting she may be returning to form at the right moment.

The Racing Post shortlisted her as a each-way player in a competitive market. At 12/1 with six places on offer, her Newbury win last season and the Henderson/de Boinville combination give her legitimate place claims.

The concern: British-trained in a race with a strong Irish bias. Her recent form figures of 69-2294 show more misses than hits and she needs to find her best form to be competitive.

Verdict: Each-way interest at 12/1 given the previous big-race win and the trainer-jockey combination.

Sixandahalf

Sixandahalf – 14/1 | Trainer: Gavin Cromwell | Jockey: Conor Stone-Walsh | Form: 1/123-24

A fascinating Festival angle. Sixandahalf finished a narrow second behind Air Of Entitlement in last year's Mares' Novices' Hurdle — a performance that announced her as a high-quality mare. She is now stepping into handicap company for the first time and Gavin Cromwell's yard arrives at this Festival in excellent form, with Conor Stone-Walsh having won the Cross Country Chase earlier in the week.

Her fourth of five at Leopardstown in December was actually a promising display given the company and she has the class from her novice form to be well handicapped off a mark of 139. Cromwell is yet to win the County Hurdle but has the horses to change that this year.

The concern: Handicap debut in a 24-runner field is always a risk. Her recent form has been below the level of her novice exploits and she needs to recapture that form.

Verdict: Interesting each-way claims given the Festival form and the Cromwell yard's current confidence. Worth including in multiples.

Others To Consider

Others to Consider

Tellherthename (11/1, Dan Skelton): Skelton's second string but not without claims. Consistent without quite winning recently — the trainer's record in this race means she cannot be dismissed entirely.

Hello Neighbour (11/1, Gavin Cromwell): Five-year-old who has been consistent this season. Cromwell in fine form at this Festival. Each-way claims at the price if the yard is in the mood.

Wilful (12/1, Jonjo O'Neill): Has placed in good handicaps this season and Jonjo O'Neill Jr knows how to ride a waiting race. Worth a small each-way interest at the price.

Bowensonfire (14/1, Gordon Elliott): Won at the Dublin Racing Festival and the Racing Post noted his form as significant. Elliott has the horses to land big handicaps and Jack Kennedy rides. Each-way claims are real.

Secret Squirrel (14/1, Hughie Morrison): Ex-Flat runner who has been consistent in good hurdle handicaps. Jonathan Burke rides. Place claims at the price.

Jubilee Alpha (16/1, Paul Nicholls): Harry Cobden is enthusiastic about her drop to 2 miles and believes the fast pace will suit. She has been below par this season but a mark of 139 and the trip drop are positives.

Ndaawi (20/1, Gordon Elliott): Carries top weight of 12 stone — the heaviest in the race. Third in the Mares' Novices' Hurdle at the 2024 Festival. The weight makes her task very difficult.

Sticktotheplan (40/1, Olly Murphy): Fits the age and ex-Flat trends but has been inconsistent. Could outrun odds at a big price each-way.

County Hurdle Tips

County Hurdle Tips – Cheltenham Festival 2026

In a 24-runner field, the smartest thing a punter can do is find the single most important piece of information and follow it. In the 2026 County Hurdle, that piece of information is Paul Townend's decision to ride Karbau over stablemate Murcia.

Townend has sat on both horses. He knows what they feel like, how they school, and which one he would rather be on in a 24-runner handicap at the Cheltenham Festival. He has chosen Karbau. That is not a coincidence — that is a signal. Add in the graded form from last spring, the improvement expected after nine months off, and the fact that he is a Mullins-trained six-year-old on his handicap debut, and the case is compelling.

Tip: Karbau (7/2)

The Townend switch, the graded novice form, and the improvement expected for his first run back make him our selection. He is a graded horse in a handicap and the market has not fully priced in what Townend's choice tells us.

4/1
● LIVE ODDS Karbau Outright Betting

Each-Way: Sinnatra (5/1)

Dan Skelton has won the County Hurdle four times. Harry Skelton has won it twice. Sinnatra is their unexposed novice on handicap debut off a mark of 133 that looks exploitable. The Sandown win in fast time shows he handles good ground and the drop back to 2 miles is what he wants. With 24 runners and six places on offer, the each-way return at 5/1 is excellent value for a horse with every chance of making the frame.

If you want to go wider, Sixandahalf (14/1) and Joyeuse (12/1) both have legitimate each-way claims and are worth including in any each-way multiple. Absurde at 10/1 is the defending champion and Mullins will have him ready — a small each-way interest is justified for punters who believe the trainer's Festival record overrides the weight and age concerns.

BOYLE Sports Betting Offers for the County Hurdle

With 24 runners declared, this race qualifies for the Extra Places offer — the most valuable offer on the card for a race of this size:

Extra Places – 1/5 odds, 6 places (22+ runners): A full field of 24 means six places are paid at 1/5 odds provided that 22+ horses run. This transforms the each-way market dramatically. Sinnatra at 5/1 each-way, Sixandahalf at 14/1, and Joyeuse at 12/1 all become significantly more attractive with six safety nets. In a race where 8 of the last 12 winners came at 10/1 or bigger, backing two or three each-way selections across the mid-market is a sound strategy.

Money Back if 2nd to SP Favourite: If your selection finishes second to the SP favourite, BOYLE Sports will refund your stake as a free bet. This applies to win singles and win part of each-way singles (outright) only. Available to BOYLE Xtra cardholders, one per customer. Full T&Cs apply.

Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG): Always take an early price with BOG in a 24-runner handicap. Markets move significantly as non-runners emerge and the betting matures on the morning of the race. Take Karbau or Sinnatra early and if the SP drifts bigger, you get paid at the bigger number.

History of the County Hurdle

What is the County Hurdle?

The County Handicap Hurdle — universally known as the County Hurdle — is a Premier Handicap (Class 1) run over 2 miles and 179 yards on Cheltenham's New Course on Gold Cup Day. It is one of the most competitive handicap hurdles of the entire Festival season and attracts a maximum field of 24 runners from across Ireland and Britain.

The race has been part of the Cheltenham Festival for decades and is known for producing winners at big prices from mid-to-large fields. With 24 runners declared in 2026, it qualifies for BOYLE Sports' Extra Places offer of 1/5 odds for the first 6 places.

History & The Mullins-Skelton Era

The County Hurdle has been dominated by two training dynasties in the modern era. Willie Mullins has six wins in the last decade, with Paul Townend his most trusted pilot in the race. Dan Skelton accounts for four British-trained wins — Superb Story (2016), Ch'tibello (2019), Mohaayed (2018), and Faivoir (2023) — making him the most successful British trainer in the race's recent history by some distance.

The race has a strong tradition of rewarding unexposed novices and horses making their handicap debuts. State Man won here in 2022 before becoming one of the dominant hurdlers of his generation. Kargese won in 2025 as the 3/1 favourite, while Absurde landed the race at 12/1 the year before — a reminder that the County Hurdle can produce both market confirmations and genuine surprises in the same breath.

The defending champion Absurde returns in 2026 seeking back-to-back wins — a feat that has been achieved in this race before. But the history of the race says the freshest, most unexposed horse from the right yard will be the one crossing the line first on Friday afternoon.
