The Gold Cup takes centre stage in our Cheltenham day four tips but there are plenty of other punting opportunities throughout Friday’s fantastic card.
There is more graded action in the Triumph Hurdle, the Albert Bartlett and the Mares’ Chase, backed up by a couple of competitive handicaps and the prestigious Hunters’ Chase.
Cheltenham Festival Day 4 Tips
Triumph Hurdle Tip
Cheltenham 13:20 – JCB Triumph Hurdle
Tip: Maestro Conti
One French hurdling win for previous connections has been followed this season by two smart successes for the Skelton team, the latter of which was a Grade Two trial for the Triumph at Cheltenham in January.
Course and distance form is therefore in the bag, and though he admittedly has far more on his plate, the feeling is Maestro Conti will have been improving all the while.
County Handicap Hurdle Tip
Cheltenham 14:00 – William Hill County Handicap Hurdle
Tip: Murcia
A Grade One winner at Aintree as a juvenile last term, the Willie Mullins-trained mare has been far from disgraced in two hot contests this term and may just be the type to save her best for the spring when running on a sounder surface.
Mares' Chase Tip
Cheltenham 14:40 – Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase
Tip: Dinoblue
Mullins’ chestnut took the Mares’ Chase in great style by nearly nine lengths last year and has since continued to prove herself to be the dominant force in this niche.
Comprehensive Grade Three and Listed wins this term show Dinoblue’s form is not at all waning and she sets a strong standard if performing in her usual consistent manner.
Albert Bartlett Tip
Cheltenham 15:20 – Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle
Tip: Thedeviluno
Has a bit to find with Doctor Steinberg from when second to that rival at Navan over two and a half miles in early December but relished a step up in distance when landing the River Don at Doncaster the following month.
Paul Nolan’s runner is evidently on the up and his staying performance at Town Moor bodes well for when Thedeviluno is faced with the Cheltenham hill and his stamina is called into question.
Gold Cup Tip
Cheltenham 16:00 – Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup
Tip: The Jukebox Man (NAP)
The Harry Redknapp-owned eight-year-old did us a big favour when last seen battling to a narrow victory in the King George on Boxing Day and we’re sticking with him for Gold Cup glory.
Gaelic Warrior and Jango Baie were just in behind at Kempton and will try to turn the tables, but trainer Ben Pauling has made no secret of how he believes The Jukebox Man will be even better suited by this track and trip.
His jumping is very impressive and he does not need to be ridden to specific instructions, so although yet to take on this three-mile-two-furlong distance, he ticks virtually every other box.
Hunters' Chase Tip
Cheltenham 16:40 – Princess Royal Challenge Cup Open Hunters’ Chase
Tip: Stattler
Won the 2022 National Hunt Chase under Patrick Mullins and is reunited with that top amateur after being nursed back to full fitness by Faye Bramley following a lengthy lay-off.
Martin Pipe Tip
Cheltenham 17:20 – Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle
Tip: Open Secret
Gordon Elliott has a great record in the race named after his former boss, winning it for the past two years and four times altogether.
The Cullentra House handler fires several bullets again this term but Open Secret takes the eye at a decent price having been given a nice sighter here on Trials Day.
