It's been a massive setback for everyone this past week at Seven Barrows. Obviously, to lose Sir Gino, who was well fancied for the Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival. That's a big loss to his team going to Prestbury Park but Nicky still has a big enough team going. They will have plenty of chances across the four days.
This could be another one of those chances in Jingko Blue, who was impressive in Wincanton when he beat Lowry's Bar . He needs to improve a bit more to get to the level of some of the Irish horses like Croke Park and a few of them who've got Grade One form and this looks like another good opportunity for him to do just that.
Lowry's Bar meets him here on five-pound better terms. They were off level terms in Wincanton but now he’s in receipt of 5 pounds. However, I think if Jingko Blue is going to give himself a chance in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase (he is 18/1 antepost) at Cheltenham then he needs to be winning this.
Reynoldstown Novices' Chase Tip: Jingko Blue – 5/4
Reynoldstown Novices' Chase Odds – 13:50 Ascot
Horse | Odds | Trainer |
---|---|---|
Jingko Blue | 5/4 | N J Henderson |
Lowry’s Bar | 15/8 | P Hobbs & J White |
The Changing Man | 5/1 | J Tizzard |

Leave of Absence | 25/1 | A J Honeyball |

It's a fascinating renewal this year of the Ascot Chase. I think Corbetts cross has been off the track for a little while. I think this is going to be too sharp for him around Ascot.
Then we have Pic D’Orhy who is so good around Ascot. He won around Ascot in his last start. He won this race last year when he beat L’Homme Presse . But L’Homme Presse was having his first run after a break on that occasion.
I think this season L’Homme Presse has had a much better preparation and Venetia Williams horses are in great form at the moment. I fancy L’Homme Presse to reverse the form with Pic D’Orhy.
Ascot Chase Tip: L’Homme Presse – 9/4
Ascot Chase Odds – 15:37 Ascot
Horse | Odds | Trainer |
---|---|---|
Pic D’Orhy | 7/4 | P F Nicholls |
L’Homme Presse | 9/4 | Miss V Williams |
Corbetts Cross | 5/2 | E Mullins |
Blue Lord | 12/1 | W P Mullins |
Le Patron | 16/1 | G & J Moore |
Flegmatik | 125/1 | D Skelton |
Kingwell Hurdle Tips – Wincanton 13:36 – 1m 7f 50y
Predictions, Tips, & Preview
I think this looks like a one-horse race with Burdett Road a class apart from the rest of the field here. Burdett Road was so good when he won the Greatwood Hurdle off of top weight in Cheltenham earlier in the season.
He was also a good 3rd at Kempton (9L) to Constitution Hill and probably very unlucky not to split Constitution Hill and Lossiemouth on that occasion due to a very bad mistake that he made at the last hurdle.
Wincanton is a sharp track that suits front runners and I think Burdett Road will be very hard to beat.
Is there something to be said for the second favourite here Golden Ace (5/2)? You must remember she beat Brighterdaysahead in the Mare’s Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham last year, so she is a classy mare. However, things just haven't quite progressed this season. They tried a 2-and-a-half mile trip the last day, and now she’s back over two miles on a flat track which should help her speed, but I think Burdett Road will have too much for her.
Kingwell Hurdle Tip: Burdett Road – 4/6
Kingwell Hurdle Odds – 13:36 Wincanton
Horse | Odds | Trainer |
---|---|---|
Burdett Road | 4/6 | James Owen |
Golden Ace | 5/2 | J Scott |
Brentford Hope | 13/2 | Harry Derham |
Hansard | 16/1 | Hansard |
Grand National Trial Tips – Haydock 15:15 – 3m 4f 97y
Predictions, Tips, & Preview
This is a race which shapes up to be very competitive and you can make a case for a good few of these horses to be heading on to Aintree later on in the season.
Royale Pagaille loves it around Haydock but he carries top weight here at 12st meaning that he’s got to give lumps away to a few nice horses in here and it's not going to be easy for him. He's done this before though so you’d never write him off around Haydock.
With that said, one of my biggest fancies for Saturday is Yeah Man for Gavin Cromwell who won this race last year albeit off 11 lbs less weight. Gavin Cromwell’s team are in flying form at the moment as it seems he can do no wrong. He has run two very competitive handicap chases in Ireland where he was 3rd in the Troytown in Navan back in November and a good 4th in the Thyestes Chase in Gowran Park a few weeks ago. I think even stepping up this extra half mile in trip would suit him.
For those reasons Yeah Man is the one for me. He's one of my biggest fancies for Saturday. Royale Pagaille obviously loves it around Haydock, but another horse that could give him a big threat is Famous Bridge . He was third in the Tommy Whittle around Haydock on his last start. Has some good form around there. So the two of them for me can threaten here but for me it’s Yeah Man all the way, I think this is his day to get a big handicap.
Haydock Grand National Trial Tip: Yeah Man – 9/2
Grand National Trial Odds – 15:15 Haydock
Horse | Odds | Trainer |
---|---|---|
Yeah Man | 9/2 | G P Cromwell |
Git Maker | 5/1 | Jamie Snowden |
Apple Away | 13/2 | Miss Lucinda V Russell |
Val Dancer | 13/2 | Mrs M Rowley |
Jubilee Express | 13/2 | S Thomas |
Royale Pagaille | 8/1 | Miss V Williams |
Famous Bridge | 8/1 | N G Richards |
Galia Des Liteaux | 9/1 | D Skelton |
Where It All Began | 14/1 | G Elliott |
Fontaine Collonges | 16/1 | Miss V Williams |
