Salford have recovered from a poor start to their season with three victories in their last three matches to climb to 13th in the table, they’re currently 9/2 to make it four in a row.

These sides have never drawn a game and are currently 10/3 to do that for the first time come Saturday.

Wrexham v Salford Preview

Wrexham’s Form

Wrexham have returned to the EFL for the first time in fifteen years following their domination of the National League last season. They amassed a sensational tally of 111 points from 46 matches last season with 34 wins, 9 draws and only three defeats to come four points clear of second-placed Notts County.

The catalyst to this escape from Non-League football? Their Hollywood Owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney which we have previously discussed here.

In fairness to the Hollywood owners, they have put their money where their mouths were from the beginning. They’ve disrupted the lower-league transfer market with the promise of higher wages and success consistently attracting players from higher divisions.

During the summer, following question marks of their now FFP constraints they started recruitment slowly initially only signing Will Boyle from Huddersfield. But a late flurry in the window brought them James McClean, George Evans, Steven Fletcher and a pair of goalkeeping loan signings to put their squad in a strong place for the League Two season.

Plenty predicted Wrexham to walk League Two this season following promotion from the National League. However, the transition in quality was never going to be a walk in the park. Proof of that is that they only earned six points from their opening five fixtures before going on a three-game winning run.

In their last four games though they’ve lost 5-0 against Stockport, drawn two games against Crewe and Manfield before winning against Crawley last weekend 0-1. It’s certainly not the walkover league win that many had forecasted.

Salford’s Form

Owned by the famous “Class of 92” group, Salford suffered promotion heartbreak last season following their seventh-place finish in the regular season. They were presented with the task of facing fourth finishers Stockport County in the Play-Off Semi-Final.

It started so sweet for them too with a 1-0 victory in the first leg they seemed Wembley-bound. However, a 2-1 AET defeat resigned them to the fourth tier for another season.

The Salford leadership never shy away from making the decisions they feel matter and during the summer 14 players left the club including 10 players released and two loaned out. Several signings were made though to refresh the squad with the vast majority of them coming from divisions higher. The likes of Garbutt and Tilt from Wigan and John on loan from Bolton all strengthen the squad.

They opened their season with an unspectacular seven points from their opening four matches. What followed was a dreadful run of form where they lost their next five league games on the spin conceding an average of two goals per game and scoring an average of 0.8 per game. The pressure was mounted on manager Neil Wood, but the tide has since turned. Salford recovered to win their next three games scoring eight goals and conceding three. They may trail Wrexham in the table but there isn’t much between both sides by the form book.

Stats

Salford have averaged 56.6% of possession, the fifth highest in League 2 while Wrexham only average 47.1% of possession.

Interestingly Wrexham tops the XG table with 21.8 (they’ve scored 24) Salford are only fifteenth on the XG table with 15.2 (they’ve scored 19).

Key Players To Watch

Elliot Lee - Wrexham

The top-rated player in League Two this season (per FOTMOB), Elliot Lee has an average rating of 7.81. He has been awarded Player of the Match a staggering five times from his twelve appearances in the league this season.

Lee has also struck the net seven times with a further two assists to his name. The former academy man, now 28, seems a different gravy in this company.

Matt Smith – Salford City

Veteran striker Smith (34) has racked up a solid striking record of 27 goals and five assists from 83 appearances since signing for Salford during the January 2022 transfer window. That includes seven goals and two assists in twelve League Two games this season.

Productivity isn’t all he has to his game though, despite getting on in years he will still drop deep out of possession to win the ball back for his team.

Wrexham v Salford Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Wrexham 1-1 Salford

Wrexham have found the adjustment to League Two tougher than many would have expected them to. Twelve games played and eight-points in their last five games means they currently occupy seventh spot in the table. Home advantage could be crucial here and a win could see Wrexham rise up the table.

Salford have nine points from their last five games but have won their last three games on the spin as they look to put their poor early-season form behind them and assert themselves in the promotion picture again.

I’m expecting a tight game here, but I think with Salford's new found form they’ll get something from this game.

Best Bet: Salford Win or Draw @ 6/4
