Fleetwood Chases Victory In Augusta Prelude
In-form Fleetwood chasing victory in Masters warm-up
Tommy Fleetwood is among the frontrunners to claim victory in the final tournament before the Masters as the in-form Englishman returns to PGA Tour action at the Valero Texas Open.
The world number four heads into the event hot off helping Los Angeles Golf Club win its first TGL SoFi Cup, teaming up with Justin Rose and Sahith Theegala to beat Tigers Woods’ Jupiter Links Gold Club in the finals.
That success continued an impressive start to the season for Fleetwood which has seen him claim three top-10 finishes in his four tournaments, including eighth in his last outing at the Players Championship.
Fleetwood, who won his maiden PGA title at last year’s Tour Championship, is the highest-ranked player involved at TPC San Antonio and is the 12/1 joint-favourite with BOYLE Sports to take the spoils on Sunday.
His European team-mate from last year’s victorious Ryder Cup, Ludvig Aberg, is also 12/1, as are American duo Jordan Spieth and Russell Henley.
Local Knowledge To Be Crucial?
Duo looking to make local knowledge count
Aberg started the year in underwhelming fashion, withdrawing from the American Express due to illness before missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open, but since then has looked a player on the up.
The Swede finished T37, T20 and T3 in successive tournaments and then appeared on course to win the biggest individual title of his career last time out, establishing a three-shot lead heading into the last day of the Players.
However, he had a nightmare final round at Sawgrass as he found water on the 11th and 12th en route to a four-over-par 76 and ended up having to settle for a tie for fifth.
The former Texas Tech University golfer should be well used to the playing conditions this week though, as should Dallas native Spieth.
The three-time major winner is poised for his 10th start in San Antonio - making the cut in all of the last seven - and is the only one of the four joint-favourites who has tasted victory at the Valero Texas Open before, winning here in 2021.
Spieth was also runner-up in 2015 just prior to claiming his first major title at the Masters and the 32-year-old would love for something similar this year.
However, Spieth has yet to claim a top-10 finish in seven starts this season and his last PGA win came at the 2022 RBC Heritage, so he will need to use all his local knowledge and experience to come out on top this weekend.
In contrast, world number 10 Henley has had a good start to the year without seriously threatening to add to his five career PGA titles.
The US Ryder Cup player has finished in the top 20 in all but one of his six tournaments and, in his only previous visit to Hill Country Golf Club in the last seven years, his consistency helped him claim a T4 in 2024.
The Rest
What of the rest?
Robert MacIntyre, Si Woo Kim and world number eight Collin Morikawa, who is returning to action after a back issue, are all 16/1 for victory this week as they look to fine-tune their Masters preparations
Defending champion Brian Harman is 50/1 to retain his title but European duo Sepp Straka (20/1) and Alex Noren (28/1) could be better options outside of the favourites.
