Tournament Name: US Open | Dates: Jun 18-21

Course: Shinnecock Hills, Southampton, New York

Par: 70 | Yardage: 7,440 | Defending champion: JJ Spaun

The US Open returns to Shinnecock Hills for the first time since 2018 and only the sixth time in the major’s 131-year history. Set on the Atlantic coast where wind is likely to be a big factor, the links-style course is one of the toughest challenges on the PGA Tour and the average winning score at the last four US Opens here is just one under par.

Scheffler chasing career Grand Slam

All eyes are on Scottie Scheffler to see if he can complete the career Grand Slam at the US Open t his week, but the world number one must overcome a star-studded field and the daunting challenges of Shinnecock Hills to join golf’s most illustrious club. Only six players have won all four major titles during their careers, with Rory McIlroy becoming the latest when, after 11 years of trying, he finally completed his collection at the 2025 Masters .

Scheffler already has the Masters, Open and PGA Championship in his trophy cabinet but the US Open has proved elusive so far, although he came close in 2022 when he finished one shot behind champion Matt Fitzpatrick , while he was third in 2023.

The American , who turns 30 on Sunday, has only won once so far this year, in his opening tournament at the American Express back in January, but he has three runners-up finishes and leads the PGA Tour in a host of metrics.

He said: “I feel like I've been close most of the year. I just haven't been as sharp as I needed to be. I think the margins in this game are so small. For me to be winning a lot of tournaments, you've got to just be really, really sharp. By no means is it a bad year. Is it up to the play I've had the previous couple of years? Probably not, but it's not far off.”

The Contenders

Scheffler is 5/1 favourite to get his hands on the trophy on his birthday, but the conditions in Southampton, New York - where winds and the links-style Shinnecock course will offer a different type of test for PGA Tour regulars - could open the door to a whole host of players, not least an in-form British contingent.

The opening two majors of the year have gone to Brits, McIlroy retaining his masters crown before Aaron Rai claimed the PGA Championship , while the Fitzpatrick brothers and Justin Rose have also won PGA titles in 2026.

They will all be looking to draw on their experience of links courses and McIlroy is second favourite @ 9/1 to notch his second US Open title and seventh major here on the Atlantic coast. Matt Fitzpatrick, a three-time winner already this year and fresh off a runners-up finish at the RBC Canadian Open, is 14/1 and our tip to finish top of the pack on Long Island. His fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood , runner-up at Shinnecock in 2018, is also 14/1 while Rose is 30/1, Rai 50/1 and Alex Fitzpatrick 66/1.

McIlroy said: “I would say this is more a UK/European style of test than certainly the first two majors at Augusta and Aronimink. So it certainly wouldn't surprise me to see a few players from Europe and the UK in contention on Sunday.”

Spain’s Jon Rahm is 11/1 third favourite to add to his 2021 US Open success, while fellow LIV Golfers Tyrell Hatton and Bryson DeChambeau, the 2024 champion, are 28/1.

Koepka's hopes hit by injury

Brooks Koepka has won this tournament twice, including the last time it was played at Shinnecock in 2018 when his one-over-par 281 total saw him finish a shot clear of Fleetwood. The five-time major winner is 30/1 to regain the title on Sunday but he has been struggling with a hand injury which saw him withdraw ahead of the final round at the Canadian Open.

Of the other leading contenders, Xander Schauffele is 12/1 , Ludvig Aberg and Cameron Young are both 18/1 while defending champion JJ Spaun is 35/1.
