Andrew Chandler: What's Next For Tiger?, Ryder Cup Goals & Masters Contenders

Tiger32

Speaking exclusively to BOYLE Sports , former agent to Rory McIlroy , Andrew ‘Chubby’ Chandler has given his perspective of what may be in store next for Tiger Woods if a Masters appearance could be on the cards, his Ryder Cup captaincy prospects and his life away from the course

Chandler has also spoken about Luke Donald's legacy as a Ryder Cup captain, rebuffing fears he could be tired claiming he's going to "rewrite history" while also assessing contenders ahead of The Masters including Tommy Fleetwood , Matt Fitzpatrick and Shane Lowry.

Elsewhere, he's given his thoughts on some of the games upcoming talent including Tom McKibbin's tour decision and Bob Mclntyre's recent "meltdown".

Tiger Woods

2026 Plan

He might play The Masters . If he plays The Masters, the prices of tickets will go up by 50%. So the black market will get worse, and he might have one more go, but he won't be competitive. He's just not strong enough. His legs aren't strong enough anymore.” “If he plays this Masters , it could be his last. It'll be a victory walk, which is sad to say, but that's what it will be.

USA Captain

He's not going to captain in Ireland and lose. He’ll be captain in 2029. He's waiting for the USA to be a better team at home. There's a difference between winning a home Ryder Cup , which is great, and losing an away Ryder Cup. If you lose an away Ryder Cup, you're nothing, and you're gone. I don't think Tiger will ever put himself in a situation where he could lose.

I think it'll probably be Justin Leonard. Leonard seems to have worked his way into it. Keegan Bradley would obviously be great for Europe !

Tiger Romance

It could all be for the image, and I think Tiger is probably ridiculously difficult. When you've been as selfish as he's been, and I'm saying that in a nice way, because to be as good as he's been, you've got to be selfish. You've got to be 100% committed.

It's very difficult to change into the lovely husband who thinks about the family. I can imagine it’s hard for him, as someone who has been divorced, as it becomes all about you, even if you don't mean it to be all about you. It’s very difficult to think about everybody around you, and it'll be the same. You'll find it really difficult to be anything but Tiger Woods.

Ryder Cup

Luke Donald

I’m not sure who the alternative is, other than giving it to Luke . Justin Rose doesn’t want it, and quite rightly, he shouldn’t want it. He’s good enough to play for the team. At the end of the day, there are no candidates. So it's a safe bet to put Luke Donald in there. Give yourself two more years, and then I would say that it's probably Justin .

Could Luke Get Tired?

No, he's going to rewrite history. He could win three in a row through. That's a pretty good incentive. He's a very safe pair of hands, very good with the players. He's got a great backroom staff. He's very detailed, and he knows what he's doing. So he's a good pick.

Ryder Cup Captain GOAT?

Put it this way, if he wins the Ryder Cup and doesn’t become Sir Luke Donald very quickly after it, then something is wrong. Looking ahead in two years’ time, there'll only be Justin , but after that, there'll be a few more that come on the scene to captain Team Europe. So Luke's not only the best choice, but also a good choice and a safe choice to take it on a bit.

The Masters

Tommy Fleetwood

No, I don't think he's got to, but I think he will be doing what he did at the end of last year because he's played well nearly every week since. I would imagine that in four majors, he'll probably give himself two chances. In the next two years, eight majors, he'll probably give himself four or five chances to win a major. I think he'll win a major. He’s got a great game; he now knows he can do things like that. His putter seems to be hanging in there now. I would say he'll give himself proper chances of winning majors.

Matt Fitzpatrick

Yeah, he has. It's a funny thing, isn't it? When guys like him win a major, they often have a tail off for a while because they built themselves up so much to win a major. Maybe that spell is finished now, and he's coming back as the player that we know he is. There's one thing that Fitzy has got: he’s got a perfect game for majors, and he's also got balls. He's got a lot of the right things to win The Masters.

Shane Lowry

I've got a couple of pals that bet a lot on the golf, and I was telling them after two days last week, I said, just be careful. He finds it really difficult to get over the line. He hasn't won that many golf tournaments for the player he is. For somebody that managed to play the Ryder Cup and withstand all the pressure of the Ryder Cup, perhaps that’s because Rory was by his side, that will have helped. But when you struggle to win like he does, it's not easy. Winning is not easy, believe me.

Can Lowry Contend At Masters?

For The Masters , I think he might take a bit of repairing for a while. The best thing that could happen would be for him to get in contention at the Players. Nobody gives you that. You've got to play very well to actually do that, and then you've got to try and get through that, so I'd leave Shane alone for a little while.

How many events will Shane Lowry win this year on Tour?

Upcoming Talent

McKibbin Tour Decision

Not at the moment, he's doing fine, everybody says. Why don't you do this? Why don't you do that? What people don't understand is that he probably needed the money. It’s easy to say ‘you should have done this; you should have done that’, but his mum and dad haven't got much, and he hasn't got much.

If somebody's wagging £15 million under your nose and you're going to win money along the way, it’s very hard to turn it down, and he's going to be alright because it's all going to turn around in his favour. All these young lads at LIV , if you have a look at their bank balances, they're all ahead of where they would have been and that in a way will make the next 10 years easier for them.

A Future Major Winner?

I would imagine so. His recent results seem to indicate he's pretty good.

Bob McIntyre "Meltdown"

I wouldn't say I have a particular concern about Bob not winning more tournaments because he hasn't given himself that many chances to win. What he does is come up behind everybody all the time without being in the heat of battle. He’ll then finish in the top five, and it looks like he's had a big chance, but he hasn't. I mean, the US Open , when he didn't win it, he played unbelievably well, didn't he? He gave himself a proper challenge.

What he needs to do is stop swearing. I mean, his language is ridiculous. How these guys don't get fined. Slow play and swearing seems to have just been accepted. It’s just not a good look. It's funny because we can take it from Tyrrell Hatton, who has managed to build up such a reputation that people actually want him to break a club.

For Bob he’s not quite there yet. He's very good. But would you say he's one of the contenders to win the Masters ? He wouldn't be in my top eight favourites. He might be sort of around the 15 that could win the Masters. But he's not there yet. He's not that good a player yet.
