The Women’s Open celebrates its 50th anniversary this week, having first been played in 1976 before becoming a major championship on the LPGA Tour in 2001. This is the sixth time the event will be held at Royal Lytham & St Annes , with England’s Georgia Hall winning the title the last time it was staged here in 2018.

Korda chasing history in final major of year
Nelly Korda will be hoping to recapture her blistering early-season form as she bids to become only the eighth player to complete the LPGA career grand slam at this week’s AIG Women’s Open. Korda started 2026 on an astonishing run, claiming four wins and three runners-up finishes in her opening eight tournaments, with her other result being tied for eighth.
Among Korda’s triumphs were victories at the opening two majors, the Chevron Championship and US Women’s Open , and, having also lifted the Women’s PGA Championship in 2021, the 28-year-old can complete the career slam on Sunday.
Although there are now five majors in the women’s calendar, and Korda hasn’t won the Evian Championship either, the LPGA recognises a player has achieved the career grand slam by winning four majors. The only player to win five different women’s majors - the ‘super slam’ - is Australian Karrie Webb.
Korda is 7/1 favourite to write her name in the record books, but she is not in the best of form heading to Royal Lytham & St Annes for the 50th edition of the Women’s Open. Since winning the US Women’s Open at the start of June, the world number one has had only one top-15 pay day in four tournaments and missed the cut at the Evian Championship.
Korda was also 16th last time out at the Women’s Scottish Open , finishing two over par and a massive 11 shots adrift of champion Jenny Shin.
Ryu to mount challenge
The Contenders
While Korda has gone off the boil somewhat, Haeran Ryu has taken up the charge and the 25-year-old South Korean is @ 11/1 for victory this week. Ryu had a solid if unspectacular start to the season, with five top-10 finishes in her opening nine tournaments, but she has found her form in her last three outings.
She finished runner-up to England's Lottie Woad at the Kroger Queen City Championship before winning back-to-back major titles at the Women’s PGA Championship and Evian Championship - becoming the first golfer, male or female, to card a 60 at a major in the process.
That took Ryu’s career trophy collection to five and helped her climb to third in the world rankings, behind Korda and Thailand’s Jeeno Thitikul, but her record on links courses is nothing to write home about, failing to record a top-20 finish in her three Women’s Open outings.
Thitikul is also 11/1 to win the year's final major while defending champion Miyu Yamashita is 12/1 to become the first back-to-back Women's Open winner since Yani Tseng in 2011.
The home challenge is led by English duo Charley Hull and Woad @ 25/1 and @ 28/1 respectively. The 30-year-old Hull finished runner-up in 2023 and 2025 but has mixed time on the LPGA Tour this year. She was second at the US Women’s Open but that is her only single-digit finish in 12 outings in 2026, while she has missed the cut on four occasions and was 44th at this month’s Scottish Open .
World number five Woad , meanwhile, will be looking for a better showing than at Royal Porthcawl 12 months ago, where she finished 49th having started the tournament as favourite. The 22-year-old said this week: "I think for any British player this would be the dream one to win. I like playing links golf and I'm sure it'll be a good test with the wind."
