Pressure off Scheffler
Pressure off Scheffler ahead of play-off opener
The big guns are back out in force as the PGA Tour heads to Memphis for the FedEx St Jude Championship , the opening event of the FedExCup play-offs. Reigning FedExCup champion Tommy Fleetwood , record three-time winner Rory McIlroy and top-ranked Scottie Scheffler are those returning to action for the start of the tour’s post-season.
In fact, the only player of the 70 who qualified that is not teeing up at TPC Southwind is Daniel Berger , who finished 60th in the standings but is sidelined by injury. The jeopardy now facing the world’s elite is that only the top 50 finishers at the St Jude Championship will feature in the next round of the play-offs, which is the BMW Championship.
The top 30 of that event will then go on to compete in the season-ending Tour Championship. Scheffler is highly fancied to join McIlroy and two-time winner Tiger Woods as the only men to win multiple FedExCup crowns later this year, and he is also favourite to claim victory in Memphis on Sunday.
The pressure is off the world number one as he cannot be overtaken at the top of the FedEx standings this week and is already guaranteed a spot in the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship. However, Scheffler is likely to be feeling a degree of frustration at how his regular-season campaign went, with his only title coming at the American Express in his first start of the year.
The American ace has been runner-up five times since then though, including at the 3M Open in his last outing a fortnight ago, and in his last 11 starts he has recorded eight top-four finishes. So the 30-year-old is nearly always a contender and now just needs to rediscover the missing piece of the puzzle that has earned him 20 PGA Tour wins over the last four years.
Scheffler is 9/2 to take the title this week and, having finished T3 and T4 in his last two visits to Memphis, we think this could be the week he finally gets back to winning ways.
The Contenders
Play-off king McIlroy back after break
McIlroy is second favourite, at odds of 10/1 , but TPC Southwind may not hold particularly fond memories for the Northern Irishman. The six-time major winner finished T68 here in 2024 and opted not to play in last year’s event.
However, he is something of a post-season expert. The world number two has won a joint-record six play-off events and is chasing an unprecedented fourth FedExCup crown , following victories in 2016, 2019 and 2022. McIlroy is currently 12th in the FedEx standings after a slimmed-down season that has seen him play just 11 events – Scheffler has had 17 – with his last outing being The Open almost a month ago.
But that schedule served Justin Rose well last year, as the Englishman, in his first tournament after The Open, won the St Jude Championship following a play-off against JJ Spaun. Of the other leading contenders this week, Sam Burns , Fleetwood and Xander Schauffele are all 14/1 to claim victory in what is set to be sweltering conditions in Tennessee , although none of them have managed a win yet in 2026.
Cameron Young , winner at the Players and Cadillac Championship earlier this year, is 16/1, the same odds as 2024 St Jude Championship winner Hideki Matsuyama.
Rookie Jackson Koivun , who scraped into the play-offs in the 70th and final qualifying spot, needs to finish in a two-way tie for seventh at the very least to have a chance of making the top 50 and continue his impressive start as a professional.
