Gerwyn Price has already tightened his grip on favouritism for the BoyleSports World Grand Prix after getting the better of Michael Smith on the opening night of darts at Leicester’s Morningside Arena.

The reigning PDC World Champion took out two ton-plus finishes en route to claiming the first set, before wrapping up the match in a thrilling second set which went the distance before an 81 checkout in the fifth leg saw Price walk off with only the seventh average of over 100 in the tournament’s history.

Speaking to BoyleSports after leaving the stage, Price admitted he was relieved to capitalise on missed darts from Smith, which would have taken the game to a deciding set:

“I flew out of the blocks, all my doubles starting was there and I was feeling confident. But two legs in the second set I bombed and I couldn’t get off. Thankfully Michael slipped up on a couple of doubles at 2-2 and gave me a chance and I took it. That’s what I’ve been doing lately; taking my opportunities.”

Price has been chalked up at 2/9 for his second round assignment against Mervyn King and...

he has also been backed down to 5/2 from 4/1 to win the tournament for the second successive year.""

James Wade was one of the biggest market movers after falling into 12/1 from 28/1 following his 2-1 victory over Damon Heta, while Dave Chisnall (16/1 from 33/1) and Stephen Bunting (40/1 from 125/1) have also enjoyed some support at bigger prices after catching the eye on the opening night.
