Gerwyn Price scooped his first BoyleSports World Grand Prix title in Coventry on Monday night with a stylish victory over Dirk van Duijvenbode.
The Dutch aubergine farmer started the tournament as a 200/1 outsider but any dreams of a fairytale ending were denied as Price held his nerve to take out 102 in the deciding leg of the seventh set to complete a 5-2 victory.
He has also joined van Gerwen as 3/1 from 5/1 favourite for next month’s BoyleSports Grand Slam of Darts, a title he won last year by beating eventual world champion Peter Wright in the final in Wolverhampton.
Price expressed relief at denying his Dutch opponent a comeback: “I was under pressure and was thankful to get over the line with that 102 because if it goes 4-3 then I’m thinking even more. It probably looked a bit easier than what it was, so I’m happy to get over the winning line.”
