Germany v Scotland Preview

Germany’s Form

Tournament Hosts Germany are looking to land their fourth Euro Championship success this summer following victories in 1972, 1980 and 1996. While they qualified as hosts, their form in 2023 was abysmal for their standards with 5 defeats, 2 draws and just 2 victories from 9 games.

However, the German's form in 2024 has been a lot more positive ahead of this tournament. During two impressive victories coming 0-2 against France and 2-1 against The Netherlands two sides who will be expected to be among the knockout stages in the summer. Ahead of their game Friday they drew 0-0 against Ukraine and defeated Greece 2-1 in the June friendlies.

Germany have been managed by Nagelsmann since he was appointed on the 22nd of September 2023 replacing the sacked Hansi Flick signing a contract until 31 July 2024, becoming Germany's second youngest coach at 36 years old, only behind Otto Nerz, who was 34 when hired in 1926.

Nagelsmann is still only (36) and has already been in senior management for seven seasons having started at Hoffenheim back in 2016 at just 28 years of age. He’s also managed RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and Germany, His teams play an attractive pressing style of football which the German squads seem to have gelled well within 2024.

Scotland’s Form

Scotland are an interesting case ahead of their opening game of Euro 2024 after qualifying for the tournament as runners-up coming 4 behind Spain with a record of 5 wins 2 draws and 1 defeat from their 8 games against Spain, Norway, Georgia and Cyprus. During qualifying they scored 17 goals and conceded 8. The highlight of that run was a 2-0 win over Spain in March 2023.

However, their tournament in 2024 has been very much a mixed bag, during the March window they lost both games first 4-0 against the Netherlands and 0-1 against Northern Ireland. Although the statistics and performances suggest their performances weren’t overly poor in either game. Ahead of Friday, they have beaten Gibraltar 0-2 and have drawn v Finland 2-2.

Their manager Steve Clarke was appointed in May 2019 on a contract initially planned to run until the end of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification. Following a poor start to his tenure, Scotland would win promotion to League A by winning their League B group in the 2022–23 competition.

His overall record as Scotland’s manager is a respectable win rate of 45.53% after guiding them to 25 wins, 13 draws and just 17 defeats from his first 55 matches in charge. Clarke has changed formation throughout but usually sets them up in some variation of a 3-4-2-1.

Key Players To Watch

İlkay Gündoğan – Germany

The German Captain remains an integral player for his club (Barcelona) and his country even though he is now 33 years old and has been playing professional football since 2008. Gundogan now has 77 Caps for Germany and 18 Goals. As a midfielder, he can do it all with his 4.78 Shot Creating Actions in the 97th Percentile, 6.93 Progressive Passes in the 85th Percentile and 2.04 Progressive Carries in the 79th Percentile.

His performances will be crucial to Germany’s chances in Euro 2024.

Scott McTominay – Scotland

The Man United midfielder is one of the most intensely underrated footballers currently playing in the Premier League, but with Scotland, his performances have been colossal since making his debut back in 2018.

While Scott started with Scotland playing in his midfield position whether that be deeper in DM or CM, he was for a period utilised at CB in a back five back in 2020. However, his performances have taken a new lease of life in the last 12 months in 2023 scoring 7 goals in 10 games for his country, having previously only scored one goal. He has the potential to reach 50 caps (currently 49) and double digits for goals (currently 8) if he can have a solid Euro 2024 campaign.

Capable in many roles from CB, to now further up the pitch in AM or as an auxiliary striker, he offers the Scottish setup endeavour, effort and underrated tactical flexibility in the summer that can’t be discounted.

Germany v Scotland Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Germany 1-1 Scotland

Germany will want to kick off their home tournament well and have recovered from a ropey run in 2023 to have three wins (vs France, Netherlands Greece) and a draw against Ukraine in 2024.

However, this Scottish side thrives on being the “underdog” and have shown in their previous performances against Spain and Norway that they can compete with the very best.

The opening night of any tournament always draws massive attention, and I can see this game being a draw with both sides qualifying from their later games.

Best Bet: Draw @ 9/2
