Georgia v Portugal Preview
Georgia’s Form
Georgia were drawn in a tough qualifying group and finished behind Spain, Scotland and Norway only coming ahead of Cyprus. However, they qualified then through the playoff path defeating Luxembourg 2-0 before a 4-2 penalty victory against The Greeks.
Following their qualification for Euro 2024 last March it was always going to be interesting to see how they approached their pre-tournament games. Ahead of the tournament they only arranged one game which was a 1-3 victory over Montenegro. Georgia were disappointingly defeated 3-1 against Turkey but followed that up with a 1-1 draw against Czechia which means they have outside hopes of reaching the knockout stage with a win here.
Under Willy Sagnol (a man linked with the Republic of Ireland role) they’ve been tactically flexible but usually with some variation of a 3-5-2, 3-4-3 or 3-4-1-2. Against Turkey, they used a 3-5-2 before 3-4-3 against Czechia. Throughout this tournament they’ve averaged 9.5 shots per game, 41.1% of possession, a pass completion percentage of 83.2% and 12 aerials won.

Portugal’s Form
Portugal are one of the in-form sides in Europe at the moment having qualified for Euro 2024 with a faultless record winning 10 out of 10 from their games against Slovakia, Luxembourg, Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Liechtenstein finishing 8 points clear of runners-up Slovakia. In the process, they scored a staggering 36 goals during qualifying and only conceded 2.
They started their 2024 in continued strong fashion with a 5-2 victory against Sweden but that was followed by a 2-0 defeat against Slovenia. In their most recent window before the tournament, they defeated Finland 4-2 and were narrowly beaten 1-2 by Croatia before convincingly beating Ireland 3-0 in their final warm-up game. It was the Late Late Show for them against Czechia when they needed a late 92nd-minute winner from Conceição for a 2-1 victory. That was followed by their latest victory 0-3 against Turkey.
Martinez has managed Portugal since he took the reins on the 9th of January 2023 replacing Fernando Santos and has a close-to-perfect record as manager so far with Portugal winning 13 of his 14 games at the helm. His side tend to average around 61.6% possession per game (74% vs Czechia). They’re also a tactically flexible outfit using 3-4-3, 4-1-4-1, 4-1-3-2 and even 4-3-3.

Key Players To Watch
The Team – Georgia
Georgia are more about the sum of their parts rather than having lots of “Top-Class” talent. Although Valencia keeper Mamardashvili (23) is arguably the best young keeper in Europe while Napoli winger Kvaratskhelia has 15 goals in 23 caps for his nation. It’s going to take a mammoth effort from every one of the players if they are going to shock the Portuguese.
Cristiano Ronaldo – Portugal
How could it be anyone else? While certainly in the “twilight” of his career Ronaldo (39) remains very much an active threat in front of goal at both club and international level.
While he didn’t get on the scoresheet in the first game, for most of it he seemed their biggest threat and managed to show his unselfish side against Turkey notching an assist. He remains a bonafide match-winner on the elite stage.
Georgia v Portugal Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Georgia 0-2 Portugal
Georgia could consider themselves a little unlucky not to have gotten something against Poland having been drawing up to the 65th minute and led in the 58th minute against Czechia before Shick equalised. It’s a game of fine margins especially at the elite level and they’ve fallen victim to that.
Portugal are a serious side and with two wins from two already, it’ll be interesting to see how much they rotate ahead of the knockout stages. But with one of the strongest strengths in depth at the tournament, it’s unlikely to matter who they field against the Georgians.
A somewhat rotated Portuguese side to do the business and win easily.
