Gavin Duffy will be saying “I’m out” after the first count in Friday’s Irish Presidential Election after punters backed him to be bottom of the pile when the first preference votes are tallied.

The Dragons’ Den businessman seems to have made little impact with punters during the campaign and following the latest TV debate on Tuesday evening, he was backed into 8/15 from Even money to be the candidate to prop up the pecking order after the first preference vote count.

Joan Freeman is the other candidate in danger of receiving the unwanted tag at 15/8.

Michael D Higgins meanwhile seems to have come through some bruising questions about his use of a €4000 Government jet unscathed. He is almost across the line at 1/40 to win the election and is odds-on at 4/6 to sweep up between 60%-70% of the first preference votes.

The race for second however has turned into a much hotter betting streak, with another Dragon Sean Gallagher (11/10) now feeling the heat in the form of 9/4 Peter Casey and Liadh Ní Riada (5/2) breathing down his neck.
