Tipperary v Galway Preview

Tipperary’s Form

League Form

Tipperary won Division 1 Group B consisting of Kilkenny, Waterford, Dublin, Antrim and Laois earlier in the season. In that campaign they won all of their five matches with a points tally of 172 points scored (the best in the group) and 113 conceded (the second best in the group).

That was good enough for a perfect record and a points differential of +59. That tally that was twice as good as the next best team which puts into perspective how good Tipp were in this year's league.

Despite this impressive record they would go on to lose in the League Semi-Final 0-25 to 1-28 at the hands of provincial rivals Limerick.

Championship Form

Tipperary entered the final round of play in the Munster Championship round-robin stage as the only unbeaten team following a 3-23 to 5-22 victory against Clare, a 4-19 to 2-25 draw away against Cork and a 0-25 piece draw against Limerick.

However, despite a Quarter-Final place secured, they lost out on a Munster Final place following their 0-21 to 1-24 defeat against bottom-placed Waterford in the final round of the round robin. Tipperary annihilated Offaly last weekend winning 7-38 to 3-18 with the returning Jason Forde hitting 2-11.

Galway’s Form

League Form

Galway came third in Division 1 Group A coming behind Cork, who surprisingly won the group, and Limerick who came second following Cork’s 0-23 to 0-22 victory in Round 1 over the reigning All-Ireland Champions.

Galway won three of their five matches while losing the other two to Cork and Limerick. In the regular league phase, they had the second-best attack with 139 points in their group an average of 27.8 points per match.

They were also solid on the defensive end with the third-best defence in their group conceding a total of 112 points an average of 22.4 points per match.

Championship Form

Galway commenced their Leinster Championship against Wexford who they beat out comfortably 0-24 to 2-12. Their second game came against Kilkenny where a late point from McLoughlin earned them a 0-28 to 1-25 draw in Nowlan Park.

In Round 3 they recorded a facile victory over Westmeath in what was a cricket scoreline, winning out by 34 points, 6-33 to 0-17.  In Round 4 they had another comprehensive victory this time against Antrim 5-29 to 1-22 before drawing their Round 5 game against Dublin in Croke Park 2-22 to 1-25 which was enough to confirm they topped the Leinster Table.

Galway then went on to lose a thrilling Leinster Final 4-21 to 2-26 against Kilkenny after conceding a last gasp goal.

Key Players To Watch

Jason Forde

The Silvermines Full-Forward Forde (29) is their biggest attacking threat starting earlier the season by hitting 2-45 in four league matches. His average of 12.75 points per match was higher than anyone else with his best total being an absurd 1-15 tally against Kilkenny.

In the Round-Robin he hit 2-6 against Clare, and 0-3 against Cork before injury struck. However, he returned in imperious form last weekend hitting 2-11 against Offaly. You can expect Forde to give Galway a torrid time at the weekend.

Jason Forde scores Tipperary's third goal of the game following a fantastic piece of movement.

Daithi Burke

During their league campaign the strength of the Galway team was in their defence with the third-best one in their group conceding a total of 112 points for an average of 22.4 points per match.

A large part of that defensive performance can be attributed to captain and rock-hard Galway Full-Back Daithi Burke! Burke was helpless to the Kilkenny goal glut in the Leinster Final but will be hoping that is just a once off for the season.

Tipperary v Galway Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Galway 1-28 Tipperary 3-21

This is an extremely tough game to call and honestly, it could go either way.

If I’m to call this one I’ll go with Galway by 1-3 points as Tipperary were arguably a little fortunate to advance out of Munster.

Both these teams have All-Ireland ambitions and we took a look at the chances of all the contenders for Liam MacCarthy in our All-Ireland Hurling odds post.

Best Bet: Galway Winning Margin 1-3 Points @ 9/2
