Galway v Tipperary Preview

Galway’s Form

The Tribesmen entered the 2025 All-Ireland Hurling Championship on the back of a third-place finish in Division 1A in the National Hurling League following a record of 3 wins and 3 defeats. Though most notably ahead of this game they lost their opening game against Tipperary in Galway by a 12-point margin 2-16 to 2-25.

In the Leinster Championship Group Stage, they finished second following a record of 4 wins and 1 defeat with an identical record to Kilkenny. However, following their 12-point loss in a 3-24 to 0-21 scoreline in Kilkenny they finished behind them via head-to-head results. That record earned them another date with The Cats in the Leinster Final, but the same result followed this time losing by 8 points in Croke Park in a 3-22 to 1-20 defeat.

That defeat meant they fell into the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals and now have this game with Tipperary to play Cork in an All-Ireland semi-final.

Tipperary’s Form

The Premier County came into the 2025 All-Ireland Hurling Championship on the back of a strong league campaign where they topped Division 1A following a record of 5 wins and 1 loss to finish 1 point ahead of Cork who they beat in Round 4 in Semple Stadium 2-22 to 1-21 to reach the league final. However, that result was reversed in the Final where they lost in Pairc Ui Chaoimh against Cork 0-23 to 3-24.

In the Munster Championship Group Stage they opened with a 2-23 a piece draw against Limerick but in the following game they were battered by 15 points against Cork in a 4-27 to 0-24 scoreline. They finished the Group Stage with 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat which saw them drop into the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-finals.

In their preliminary quarter-final, they made light work of Laois winning by a staggering 23 points in a 0-18 to 3-32 scoreline to reach this game against Galway. If they overcome the Tribsemen they will book themselves another crack against Cork.

Key Players To Watch

Cathal Mannion - Galway

Galway’s top-scorer in the Championship this season so far is Ahascragh-Fohenagh player and Corner Forward Cathal Mannion (30) who made his Championship debut for Galway over a decade ago in 2014.

This season he has a tally of 2-54 which is an average of 10 points per game with Seán Currie of Dublin 4-52 and Lee Chin of Wexford 3-56 the only players with larger tallies. In their Leinster Final defeat to Kilkenny, he scored 0-11 of their 1-20 total and will be their main marksman again on Saturday.

This season he has been Tipperary’s top-scorer with a tally of 2-31 across 7 matches for an average of 7.4 points per game. In their latest win over Laois, he hit a tally of 2-04 and more of the same will be expected of him for this All-Ireland quarter-final.

Galway v Tipperary Prediction & Best Bet

Galway will have been written off by many following their Leinster Final defeat to Kilkenny, but on their day with stars like Mannion, they’re fully capable of giving Tipperary a game.

Aside from a few defeats to Cork this year, Tipperary have been one of the most consistent teams in the country and will fancy their chances of getting another chance against Cork in the coming weeks.

Galway will provide more of a challenge than people expect, but Tipperary should still come away with a win.

Prediction: Galway 1-17  Tipperary  2-20

Best Bet: RTÉ Man Of The Match – Jason Forde – 8/1
