Jim O’Callaghan has tightened his grip on favouritism to replace Micheál Martin as the leader of Fianna Fáil following strong financial support that arrived on Wednesday morning.

The Dublin Bay South TD has been trimmed into the 11/8 favourite from 2/1 to succeed Martin with the Taoiseach just a 7/4 shot to lose his grip on leadership of the party by the end of this year. ""

Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Michael McGrath has also seen some support to succeed Martin. The Cork South-Central TD is now 3/1 from 5/1.

The Government has been forced to abandon plans for a partial re-opening of schools in the face of union opposition. Minister for Education Norma Foley has conceded that the phased return for thousands of pupils cannot go ahead because of a lack of co-operation. This has resulted in her chances drifting out to 20/1 from 16/1.

Support for Darragh O’Brien, Minister for Housing, has also dried up following the RTE Investigates programme on the homeless crisis. His odds have been pushed out to 10/1 from 8/1.
