France v Belgium Preview

France’s Form

France dominated a relatively tough Euro qualifying group going unbeaten with 7 wins and 1 draw from their games against The Netherlands, Greece, The Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar. That record put them 4 points clear of the Dutch following their 29 goals scored and only 3 conceded. Following qualification, their 2024 started with a 0-2 loss to Germany and a 3-2 win over Chile. Before the tournament earlier this month, they beat Luxembourg 3-0 and drew with Canada 0-0.

Despite mammoth expectations on them for Euro 2024, they have been less than impressive during their group campaign. In their opening group game, a 38th-minute Wober own goal was enough in the end to see off Austria’s tough challenge 0-1. That was followed by unconvincing displays 0-0 against The Netherlands and 1-1 against Poland which meant they finished second to Austria in the group.

Didier Deschamps has been in charge of France since he was first appointed on the 8th of July 2012 and has brought them to a 2018 World Cup title, a runner-up finish in the 2022 tournament, a Nations League success in 20/21 and a Euro Championship runner-up at Euro 2016. Throughout the tournament, they have had 16 shots per game, an average of 56.4% of possession and a pass completion percentage of 89.1% with 11 aerials won per game.

Belgium’s Form

Belgium secured qualification for Euro 2024 following a 20-point total where they went unbeaten in qualifying with 6 wins and 2 draws from their games against Austria, Sweden, Azerbaijan and Estonia. That record meant they finished 1 point ahead of runner-up Austria after scoring 22 goals and only conceding 4 goals. Belgium opened their 2024 with two draws in March 0-0 against the Republic of Ireland and 2-2 against France. Ahead of the tournament though they had two comfortable victories 2-0 against Montenegro and 3-0 against Luxembourg.

Belgium have been a mixed bag at Euro 2024, in their opening fixture were the better side against Slovakia but failed to convert their chances and fell to a 0-1 defeat. In their second game, Tielemans and De Bruyne gave them a routine 2-0 win against

Romania but in their final group game, they were again less than impressive with a 0-0 draw with Ukraine.

Domenico Tedesco was appointed on 8 February 2023, on a contract due to run until the end of UEFA Euro 2024. Despite being relatively young for a manager (38), he had already amassed 6 years of coaching experience with the likes of Spartak Moscow and RB Leipzig. From his first 16 games in charge, he has guided them to 11 wins, 5 draws and a loss for a win rate of 64.71% more often than not favouring a 4-2-31 or 4-3-3 formation. Throughout the tournament, they have had 16 shots per game, 58.6% possession on average and a pass completion rate of 85.8% and 11.3 aerials won too.

Key Players To Watch

Kylian Mbappe – France

The man who almost single-handedly brought France to a World Cup at the last international tournament before coming unstuck to Messi. A lot is expected of the World Class attacker who has 48 goals in 81 games for his country. After only one group goal, a penalty against Poland and injury issues, it still seems like only a matter of when and not if he scores again at Euro 2024.

Jeremy Doku – Belgium

The Man City winger Doku (21) is a throwback to the wingers of years gone by, even in a Guardiola system which is militantly robotic his show-stopping skills and elite dribbling ability is a joy to watch in this day and age where football has become increasingly “robotic”.

Doku averages 11.96 Progressive Carries, 5.60 Successful Take-Ons and 12.72 Touches in the Attacking Penalty Per 90 which are all stats in the 99th percentile for all wingers

France v Belgium Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: France 3-1 Belgium

France have been less than impressive so far, but in their defence, they still had enough to overcome their tough group draw. They have levels to go and if they do they remain serious prospects.

Belgium are not quite the side of old, but have less pressure on them to perform so it could work in their favour.

I’m expecting lots of goals here but with France being far too good for Belgium in the end.

Best Bet: France Win + Over 3.5 Goals @ 11/2
