Spain
Spain to reign again on foreign plains?
Spain are outright favourites with BOYLE Sports to become the first European nation to win the World Cup on North American soil this summer, with France a close second. In the previous three World Cups to be held in North America, Brazil were crowned champions twice, at Mexico ‘70 and USA ‘94 , while Argentina walked off with the title at Mexico ‘86. But it is the European countries who are expected to lead the challenge at the expanded 48-team competition in 2026.
Spain are 9/2 to take the spoils in East Rutherford on July 19, while France are 6/1 to give long-serving manager Didier Deschamps a winning send-off and England 11/2 to finally rediscover the winning formula under Thomas Tuchel . The Spanish are well used to breaking the mould, with their 2010 success in South Africa seeing them become the first European team to lift the cup outside of the Old Continent.
They are also heading into this summer’s competition in formidable form. Luis de la Fuente’s side have only lost twice in over two years, with one of those defeats being a penalty shoot-out loss to Portugal in the 2025 Nations League final, while they topped FIFA's world rankings until being edged out by France in the latest window.
England & France
Three Lions looking to end 60 years of hurt
Spain’s biggest threat this summer could well be the side they narrowly beat in the Euro 2024 final, England. The Three Lions have not won a major trophy since the 1966 World Cup, but, after becoming a force under Gareth Southgate , they are now looking to get over the finishing line with German Tuchel . England won all eight of their World Cup qualifiers without conceding a goal and boasts a squad laced with experience and talent, although disappointing friendly results against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley will have tempered expectations.
Star-studded France also have all the ingredients to do well this summer, and also the motivation with the hugely successful Deschamps due to step down after the tournament following 14 years in the hotseat. Captain of France’s 1998 World Cup- winning team, Deschamps led Les Bleus to title glory in 2018 before finishing runners-up to Argentina four years ago in Qatar . He would love to sign off with another success, but France face arguably the toughest pool, with AFCON finalists Senegal , Iraq and Erling Haaland’s Norway alongside them in Group I.
Best of the Rest
Threat from the South
Behind the European trio in the betting are South American heavyweights Brazil and Argentina , who are 8/1 to win the World Cup . All signs point to Argentina going deep again. They are the defending champions, are third in the world rankings and finished nine points clear in the CONMEBOL qualifying section. Like France , they will also want to give a memorable farewell to a national legend, with the soon-to-be 39-year-old Lionel Messi likely to hang up his boots after the World Cup. Brazil , in contrast, are something of an unknown quantity.
The Selecao , as always, have an enviable array of attacking options that includes Vinicius Junior, Raphinha and Matheus Cunha , but they finished only fifth in qualifying, 10 points behind arch-rivals Argentina , and have had some mixed results under Carlo Ancelotti since he took charge last summer. Germany are 12/1 to join Brazil on five World Cup titles, while Portugal are also 12/1 to complete Cristiano Ronaldo’s glittering CV before he likely signs off from international duty. The Netherlands can be backed at 20/1, Norway are 25/1 and Belgium are 33/1.
