There have been some notable omissions from the England World Cup squad.

Phil Foden , Cole Palmer , and Trent Alexander-Arnold , among others, were left out of Thomas Tuchel 's 26-man party as the German made an eye-catching first tournament selection.

Here, BOYLE Sports has selected an alternative England World Cup XI that will be staying at home this summer.

Keeper

Aaron Ramsdale (Newcastle)

In a parallel universe, Ramsdale would be a title winner at Arsenal and World Cup -bound with England . But the 28-year-old's career has been on the slide since losing the gloves to David Raya at Arsenal , being relegated with Southampton , and then struggling to establish himself at Newcastle .

Defence

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Real Madrid)

The dream move to the Bernabeu has not worked out for the 27-year-old right-back. Revered at Liverpool for his passing and crossing ability, Alexander-Arnold 's first season in Spain has ended trophyless – and now he is out of the World Cup picture.

Harry Maguire (Man Utd)

A defensive rock and set-piece threat for England at previous major tournaments. Despite an impressive season at Old Trafford , Maguire was overlooked by Tuchel , with the experienced centre-back saying he was "shocked and gutted" to be missing out.

Trevoh Chalobah (Chelsea)

Emerged from a chaotic season at Stamford Bridge with credit. Made over 40 starts in all competitions but has been unable to force his way into Tuchel 's plans after making his England debut against Senegal last summer.

Luke Shaw (Man Utd)

This time last year, the thought of injury-hit Shaw going to the World Cup was fanciful. But the 30-year-old, who played for England at both the 2014 and 2022 World Cup s, has proved his fitness and enjoyed a consistent campaign for Manchester United .

Midfielders

Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace)

Part of England 's Euro 2024 squad, where he was an unused substitute. The elegant 22-year-old midfielder helped Palace to Premier League safety and the Conference League final, but the emergence of Elliot Anderson and the renaissance of Kobbie Mainoo hurt his hopes.

James Garner (Everton)

Excellent form for Everton , where he was named player of the season, saw the former Manchester United midfielder make a late run for summer selection. Misses out after making his debut against Uruguay in March, when he was named player of the match.

Attackers

Jarrod Bowen (West Ham)

Possibly a victim of West Ham 's miserable form and potential relegation from the Premier League . Quick and direct from the right flank, Bowen played at Euro 2024 but missed out on the World Cup again after Sir Gareth Southgate overlooked him in Qatar four years ago.

Cole Palmer (Chelsea)

Despite suffering an inconsistent and injury-hit season, there will be many who believe that Palmer should have been selected. No goal for over two months, but still in double figures and has hinted at a return to the form that can unlock any defence in recent weeks.

Phil Foden (Man City)

See above. Bit-part player in City's title bid and has not scored since mid-December, yet just two years ago the 25-year-old was crowned the Footballer of the Year . The common view was that Foden and Palmer were battling for one World Cup spot, but in the end, neither will go.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Leeds)

Fifteen goals at Leeds do not obviously count more than for over 40 in Saudi Arabia . Calvert-Lewin has revived his career at Elland Road in spectacular fashion after banishing injury concerns, but the 29-year-old striker will not add to his dozen caps this summer, with Al-Ahli 's Ivan Toney preferred.
