Julian Quinones has been the star performer with three goals and he said: “You can stand out as an individual, but that’s only possible because of the team’s great performance. That’s our mindset. We have to keep fighting.”
Quinones has teamed up well with veteran strike partner Raul Jimenez and El Tri will be a threat, but England should enjoy facing opponents who are more prepared to get forward. To be fair, the Three Lions haven’t exactly made smooth progress to this point, starting out with a 4-2 triumph over Croatia which exposed some defensive flaws during times of transition. After being stifled by Ghana in a goalless stalemate, England eventually wore down Panama when prevailing 2-0 to top their pool. Getting past DR Congo was expected to prove a straightforward task but the Leopards gave Thomas Tuchel’s men an almighty scare after snatching an early lead. However, just as the tension was really mounting, captain marvel Harry Kane came to the rescue with a double strike in the latter stages.
“He’s our captain, he’s our leader and decides football matches with unbelievable finishes,” beamed Tuchel . “The second one was just a brilliant goal.” Playing at altitude is an issue and England will need more help from the supporting cast, but it is a major boost to have big guns Kane and Jude Bellingham firing on all cylinders - plus they do just have a happy knack of finding a way to advance through major tournaments of late.
