Few people will look beyond Belgium for their 2026 World Cup Group G predictions , with this being widely regarded as one of the weaker sections.
However, the other three teams are no strangers to upsetting the odds and will be determined to make their mark at this summer’s tournament.

New Zealand
4. New Zealand @ 20/1
The All Whites will be hoping to make it third time lucky in terms of getting past the pool stage, having been outclassed at Spain 82 but then faring much better in South Africa 16 years ago, where they drew with Slovakia , Italy and Paraguay but just missed out on advancing.
Former Watford stalwart Darren Bazeley did well with New Zealand’s Under-20s set-up before earning promotion to the senior team and followed up an OFC Nations Cup triumph by sailing through the World Cup qualification process.
Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood netted nine times as the Kiwis cruised to five straight convincing victories, but it goes without saying that the standard of opposition is about to get a lot tougher and they are expected to finish bottom of the World Cup Group G table .
Iran
3. Iran @ 6/1
Team Melli have suffered early exits at three straight World Cup tournaments (and six overall), but they did come agonisingly close to going further in 2018, when they beat Morocco and drew with Portugal either side of a narrow defeat by Spain.
A win over Wales four years ago provided more evidence that Iran are not to be underestimated and Amir Ghalenoei’ s current squad posted some big wins en route to North America.
Assessing a group of largely home-based players is tricky, but those that have ventured elsewhere are useful performers, including Olympiacos striker Mehdi Taremi , Rostov midfielder Mohammad Mohebi and former Brighton ace Alireza Jahanbakhsh.

Egypt
2. Egypt @ 9/2
All eyes will be on Mohamed Salah as he looks to prove there is life after Liverpool with a bold World Cup showing, although it should be noted the Pharaohs have other strong options up front.
Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush , former Aston Villa winger Trezeguet and Mostafa Mohamed of Nantes played their part in a smooth qualifying session that yielded eight wins and two draws from 10 outings, with 20 goals scored and just a couple conceded.
Egypt have never won a match at the World Cup finals but are perennial challengers for Africa Cup of Nations glory and current head coach Hossam Hassan is just the man to get the best out of them, having been capped an incredible 176 times during his playing days.
Belgium
1. Belgium @ 4/11
Many thought this tournament would be a step too far for Belgium’s golden generation, which peaked with a third-place finish in 2018 before disappointing four years ago, but an eight-match unbeaten run in qualifying has rekindled hopes of a last hurrah.
Head coach Rudi Garcia enjoyed success in France at club level and appears intent on letting his players enjoy themselves, with 29 goals scored en route to the finals and March’s 5-2 friendly win over the United States in Atlanta providing another boost.
The old guard of Kevin De Bruyne , Romelu Lukaku , Axel Witsel , Leandro Trossard and Thibaut Courtois are still holding their form, but Garcia will be buoyed by the continued development of Aston Villa midfielders Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana , plus Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku , in a solid Belgium World Cup 2026 squad .
