Northern Ireland will look to build on an historic start to their Nations League campaign when they welcome group favourites Hungary to their Windsor Park fortress. Shea Charles ’ volley eight minutes into stoppage time snatched a dramatic 1-0 victory over Georgia in Tbilisi on Friday as they made a triumphant return to League B following promotion.
Charles ’ winner came after his younger brother Pierce had saved a second-half penalty from Paris St Germain star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia , helping Northern Ireland record a first competitive clean sheet away from home since 2024. It was also their first away win in the Nations League , and their first victory anywhere in 11 matches at League B level.
Michael O’Neill’s side will now hope to pick up something at home to Hungary , who are the top seeds but suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Ukraine in their opener. That was a surprise setback for the two-time former World Cup finalists and we think a buoyant Northern Ireland could add to their frustration with at least a draw on Monday @ 2/1.

Hungary had been playing at the top tier of the Nations League for the last two editions and even helped relegate England in 2022 after doing the double over Gareth Southgate’s men, including a famous 4-0 win at Molineux .
Hungary finished second in Group A3 that season, a point behind Italy and above Germany and England , but they weren’t able to continue that form in their 2024-25 campaign. They were relegated last year after finishing third behind Germany and the Netherlands - albeit having held both of those powerhouses to 1-1 home draws - before being thrashed 6-1 on aggregate by Turkey in the play-offs.
Their return to League B for the first time since 2020 this week did not go well for Marco Rossi’s men either, losing to Ukraine . Danylo Sikan’s first-half goal in Budapest proved the difference and even though Ukraine were reduced to 10 men late on, a Hungary side including Liverpool duo Dominik Szoboszlai and Milos Kerkez could not get back on terms.
Hungary will feel they should have got more out of that game, with their 17 shots on goal almost twice as many as Ukraine , and they will hope for better in Belfast . We’re not expecting many goals so we’re going for a draw with under 3.5 goals in total @ 23/10.
