Spurs were picked apart 3-0 at Brentford on the opening weekend, shipping 4.0xG in the process – an alarming number for a defence that will need to tighten up fast.
De Zerbi's football asks a lot of players positionally, though, and a squad still learning his ideas was always likely to look raw before it looks coherent.
There was a response of sorts in midweek, with a 5-1 EFL Cup win over Charlton Athletic offering some reassurance going forward in a side which featured five changes from the XI that started against Brentford.
The summer rebuild continues to take shape, with Sandro Tonali, Sávio (Savinho), Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke and loanee Omar Marmoush all arriving, while new defender Marcos Senesi made an instant impression on his debut, completing 75 passes – a club record of completed passes in a Premier League debut.
