Struggling Sunderland will be hoping history repeats itself as they seek to escape the foot of the Premier League when they host Chelsea. The Black Cats have picked up just one point from their last six league games and were booed off at the Stadium of Light following Thursday’s Europa League loss to Dinamo Zagreb, leaving boss Régis Le Bris under increasing pressure.
However, they should have fond memories of facing Chelsea after doing the double over the Blues last season, winning both games 2-1. Chemsdine Talbi’s stoppage-time goal earned a comeback victory at Stamford Bridge, while a Trai Hume strike and Malo Gusto own goal sealed a home win over 10-man Chelsea on the final day of the season, a result that clinched a European spot for Sunderland and saw the Blues miss out.
With that in mind, and the fact four of Sunderland’s five wins in all competitions this term have come at home, we think they could pick up something on Sunday afternoon, with our prediction being a score draw @ 10/3.

Form Guides
Sunderland Form Guide
Sunderland have been unable to replicate their flying start to last season and juggling domestic commitments with a first European campaign in 53 years is proving difficult. The good news for Black Cats fans is that things are going relatively well in the cups, reaching the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and picking up seven points from four Europa League games.
The bad news is that not only is their Premier League form pretty terrible, with just five points from a possible 27, but they now face a daunting run of fixtures. Their next five league games are against Chelsea, Aston Villa, Spurs, Liverpool and bitter rivals Newcastle, after which they must go to AC Milan in Europe.
Sunderland have been much stronger at home than away, but Thursday’s 2-0 Europa League loss did not go down well with frustrated supporters. The rock-bottom Black Cats are 13/5 to bounce back with a league win but we’re going for a 1-1 draw @ 6/1.
Chelsea Form Guide
Chelsea may have climbed back into the top four with last Saturday’s win over 10-man Manchester United but the Blues are still very much a work in progress under Xabi Alonso. They are third in the league for goals scored (23), but only four teams have conceded more than their tally of 15, while no team in the top 12 has lost more games.
Even without European football to juggle, they could not go deep in the Carabao Cup, knocked out by Liverpool on penalties at the last-16 stage , and now Alonso must find a way to keep his expensively assembled squad happy with only limited playing opportunities available. Two stars who are unlikely to find it hard to get into Alonso’s starting line-up are England forwards Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer.
They were Chelsea’s goalscorers against United, with record-signing Rogers taking his season tally to six while Palmer now has five goals to his name. Rogers is chasing a goal in a third successive game, while Palmer, who struck against the Black Cats in May, is 6/4 to net again.
