Morris: If Enzo Fernandez Doesn't Want to Be at Chelsea, the Quicker He Leaves the Better

Speaking exclusively with BOYLE Sports , former Chelsea assistant Jody Morris has delivered his verdict on the squad decisions facing Xabi Alonso at Stamford Bridge this summer.

Morris says he would rather see Enzo Fernandez move on if his heart is not in it, while acknowledging the Argentine was one of very few Chelsea players to earn pass marks last season.

The former Chelsea man has also assessed the sale of Marc Cucurella , whether Jorrel Hato or Lewis Hall is the answer at left wing-back, the suitability of Maxence Lacroix , and the £50 million departure of Andrey Santos to Manchester United .

Would It Be Best if Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea Parted Ways?

If people aren't wanting to pay the money for a player, then he stays. Enzo Fernandez is one of the few who would get pass marks last year for Chelsea ; there weren't many at all. But I have always been the same: if someone doesn't want to be at a football club, then let them go.

Letting them go doesn't mean letting them go for cheap. Given the amount we spent on him, whether we get anywhere near that price is another question. If people don't want to be at Chelsea , I would rather they go, regardless of how they performed or how much you like the player. I imagine most managers or coaches would feel the same. Owners will be different because they need to get value for money. The value might be there after the World Cup he had. It might be the best opportunity to try and claw back as much of the fee we shelled out as possible.

If he doesn't want to go, then you have a player who has produced for Chelsea before. I am sure Xabi Alonso wouldn't mind having him in the squad if he wants to be there. But if he doesn't, the quicker he leaves, the better.

Was Selling Marc Cucurella a Mistake?

Things can change quickly in football. Many Chelsea fans were fuming with Marc Cucurella last season when he was doing interviews that clearly looked like he wanted out. To be fair to him, even though Enzo Fernandez was punished, I thought his words were interpreted worse than what he actually said.

He said he would love to play for Real Madrid one day, and I don't think there are many out there who wouldn't. He hasn't endeared himself to fans with his antics against Chelsea or what we saw in the World Cup final, but things change quickly, and fans can be fickle. As soon as a player scores or produces an assist, opinions change. I think too much was made of what he said when he was at Chelsea . We need to wait and see. Does it look like he wants to move? Maybe. He hasn't openly said it yet. If he does want to leave, we would all be better off if he got what he wanted and we got as much money as possible.

Should Chelsea Move For Lewis Hall?

I really liked Cucurella ; he is the type of player you love when he's on your team but want to tackle hard if you're playing against him. He showed passion and fire when it wasn't going well and had an outstanding World Cup . Whether Chelsea think they have a ready-made replacement in Jorrel Hato remains to be seen.

Hato can play on the left side of a back three, which might suit Xabi Alonso , especially with Levi Colwill in the middle. Hato did okay when he came in last year. I don't necessarily think he could fill a left wing-back role as easily as Cucurella could.

Lewis Hall has had an outstanding season and was extremely unlucky not to be picked for the World Cup . Chelsea has a history of letting players go and then trying to sign them back, so it wouldn't surprise me. At the moment, we need to wait and see because I know the club has high hopes for Hato .

Is Maxence Lacroix Ready For Chelsea?

I thought Lacroix did great for Crystal Palace last year in a back three. Playing for Palace and Chelsea are two different things. I didn't think he played well for France . I was telling my friends that I would be interested to see how he does in a back four, because I've only ever seen him in a three.

He had a very poor game against Spain , and I didn't think he was great against England either, where they conceded six goals. Playing in a four is totally different. If we are going to play a three, he could suit the team, but I'm intrigued to see how Alonso sets us up.

Is he someone with Premier League experience? Has he produced and performed in the Premier League at a high level? Absolutely. So if we are going to play a three, he could suit. If we are going to play a four, I hope he doesn't perform like that all the time if we are going for him. He has had two great seasons at Palace , but as I said, Palace and Chelsea are two different things.

Did Chelsea Make a Mistake Selling Andrey Santos?

Andrey Santos was a backup and didn't really play that much. Although he did get appearances, many were as a sub, or he was subbed off early. For £50 million, that's not a bad deal. I liked him; I thought he had a bit of everything in midfield and can certainly improve with age.

I was surprised Manchester United paid that money for him, but there is certainly a player in there with huge potential. If he is able to play regularly enough to realise that potential, then Manchester United have a decent player.
