Since then, the picture has improved at the back. A 1-0 home defeat to reigning champions and title favourites Arsenal was decided by a single Bukayo Saka finish, and a goalless draw at Hull City brought a first clean sheet of the season.
The goals arrived in midweek. Villa won 3-2 away to Club Brugge in their Champions League opener, with Nicolas Jackson scoring his first goal for the club.
Unai Emery 's team news is mixed. Amadou Onana is a long-term absentee with an ACL injury, Leon Goretzka is not expected back until October, and Johan Manzambi and Brian Madjo are both doubts. João Gomes serves the final match of a domestic suspension, while Matty Cash is being assessed.
