The international break gives us a good chance to assess the early form of this season’s front-runners in the PFA Player of the Year odds. Votes won’t be cast until next spring , but speculation is already under way regarding who might become the latest winner of a title first awarded to Leeds United’s Norman Hunter back in 1974.
Poll: Have Your Say
Leading Contenders
Here’s how the leading contenders are shaping up:
ERLING HAALAND (MAN CITY) @ 4/1
With club stalwarts like Rodri, Bernardo Silva and John Stones moving on, Haaland has taken on more responsibility at Etihad Stadium , both in terms of media work and on the pitch. That hasn’t affected his goalscoring prowess, though, and the City striker is already leading the way in his bid for a record-equalling fourth Premier League Golden Boot in just five seasons.
Haaland has become a very likeable figure , but there is just that cloud of uncertainty over whether City’s financial charges saga could affect how fellow players vote.
BRUNO FERNANDES (MAN UTD) @ 5/1
The current title holder was an overwhelming winner last term on the back of his record-breaking assists tally that helped lift United up to third place in the table. Fernandes has only set up one goal so far this season but has scored three himself in what can best be described as a patchy start to the campaign by the Red Devils .
MARTIN ODEGAARD (ARSENAL) @ 7/1
Arsenal’s title triumph was seen very much as a team affair but there have been early signs of Odegaard elevating himself to become the leader of the pack this time around. The Norwegian’s all-round play and match-winning goals against Chelsea in the Premier League and away to Napoli in the Champions League have put him ahead of team-mates Declan Rice (10/1) and Bukayo Saka (14/1) in the pecking order for votes.
COLE PALMER (CHELSEA) @ 8/1
In terms of Premier League productivity, Palmer has been surpassed by 25/1-priced team-mates Joao Pedro (three goals and three assists) and Morgan Rogers (three goals and one assist), but Palmer (two of each) is still the poster boy of this entertaining Chelsea outfit . Rogers joked about how his four assists were overlooked as Palmer was named man of the match after a 6-3 League Cup win over Leeds in which one of his two goals was a penalty, but that just highlighted who is the centre of attention at Stamford Bridge .
RAYAN CHERKI (MAN CITY) @ 8/1
The France playmaker got off to a flying start when coming off the bench to inspire City’s fightback versus Bournemouth with two assists and then bagged a brace of goals himself in a brilliant display at Crystal Palace. Enzo Maresca does tend to mind Cherki a touch by taking him off whenever starting, which is a bit of a negative with regards to this award , plus there is the same public perception problem regarding City that Haaland will face, but the 23-year-old is great to watch .
ALEXANDER ISAK (LIVERPOOL) @ 25/1
Isak has already managed to score more times in the Premier League this term than he did in an injury-ravaged first season at Anfield, claiming four goals so far, including a very welcome winner at Bournemouth last time out. New Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has demanded even more from the club’s £125million signing , but he should get plenty of service and chances to shine once fellow big-money buy Bradley Barcola fully settles in.
