Most expensive British transfers

Morgan Rogers has joined Chelsea from Aston Villa for a fee understood to be £117million, signing a seven-year deal to become the Blues’ record signing.

The 23-year-old, who has just returned from helping England to a third-place finish at the World Cup , becomes the most expensive English player and tops a star-studded list of British players to make a record move.

Morgan Rogers

Morgan Rogers (£117m)

Chelsea stole in ahead of Arsenal , who had been in talks to sign the England international and had appeared to be favourites to secure his signature.

It is understood the chance to work with new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso was a key factor in persuading Rogers , who enjoyed a rapid rise at Villa Park following his move from Middlesbrough in January 2024 and helped fire Villa to a top-four finish and Europa League glory last season.

Elliot Anderson

Elliot Anderson (£116m)

Many top clubs were circling around the highly-rated England midfielder but the Etihad Stadium was his preferred destination and he moved for a club-record fee, overtaking Jack Grealish as City's most expensive signing.

Anderson joined Forest from Newcastle in 2024 for £35million and went on to make 88 appearances for the club. After rejecting two previous offers, Forest accepted a third which was their most expensive sale.

Declan Rice

Declan Rice (£105m)

Rice made the switch from West Ham to Arsenal in 2023 for a club-record fee of £105m and helped the club win their first Premier League title since 2004 last season.

After he made 245 appearances for West Ham, Rice was then the joint-most expensive English player and has cemented his name as one of the country's best midfielders since moving across London to the Emirates Stadium.

Jack Grealish

Jack Grealish (£100m)

Anderson's price tag eclipsed the fee Manchester City paid Aston Villa in 2021 for Grealish, who went on to help the club win the treble in 2023.

Grealish's move was previously the biggest deal in British football history after City activated his £100m release clause.

Harry Kane

Harry Kane (£100m)

Many thought Kane would stay loyal to boyhood club Tottenham but in the summer of 2023, and following months of speculation, he moved to Bayern Munich to fulfil his dream of adding silverware to his trophy cabinet.

Kane's price tag has been more than justified having scored 146 times in 147 games for Bayern, helping them to two league titles and the German Cup last season.

Jude Bellingham

Jude Bellingham (£88.5m)

Bellingham moved from Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid for an initial fee of £88.5m which could still rise to £115m.

The England star had always dreamt of a switch to the Bernabeu and was destined for a move to Los Blancos ever since Birmingham sold him to Dortmund for around £25m as a 17-year-old.

Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale (£85.1m)

Bale joined Real Madrid for a then world-record transfer fee after he quickly became one of the best players in the Premier League following an impressive few years at Tottenham .

Bale's fee eclipsed the £80m Madrid paid Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009 and he helped the club win five Champions League titles during his time in Spain , scoring 106 times in 258 games.

Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire (£80m)

Maguire became the most expensive defender when he made the switch from Leicester to Manchester United in 2019, and seven years later there has still not been a higher fee paid for a defender.

The 33-year-old initially seemingly struggled to adapt to life at one of the biggest clubs in the world but has stuck by his task and has made 271 appearances for the Red Devils .
