World Cup Play-Off: Majority of Irish Writing Off Czechs

Boys in Green backed to progress in Prague

Confidence is high among Irish fans ahead of tonight’s crunch World Cup clash, with two-thirds of punters backing an upset against Czechia, despite the hosts being favourites.

BOYLE Sports has priced the Boys in Green as 11/4 underdogs for their crucial play-off semi-final in Prague, while the Czechs are rated odds-on at 10/11, underlining the scale of the task facing Heimir Hallgrímsson’s side.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said:

“The odds might suggest Ireland are up against it, but the confidence among supporters tells a very different story. The Hungary heroics are fresh in the memory, and there’s a real belief out there that the Boys in Green have another upset well within reach.”

Victory on the road would move Ireland one step closer to ending their long wait for a return to the FIFA World Cup finals, having not featured on the global stage since 2002. Ireland kept their hopes alive in dramatic fashion thanks to a stunning hat-trick from Troy Parrott against Hungary, with his last-gasp goal injecting renewed belief into the fanbase ahead of tonight’s showdown.

The reward for navigating the play-offs would be a place in Group A at this summer’s World Cup, where Mexico, South Korea and South Africa are already waiting.  Ireland are 3/1 shots to qualify outright, with a potential play-off decider against either Denmark or North Macedonia in the pipeline should they overcome the Czechs.  Denmark are rated the most likely of the quartet to progress, priced at 5/6 to secure their place at the finals, while anyone dreaming of the famous trophy returning to Ireland can get odds of 500/1.
