Scotland face another tough test in their build-up to the World Cup when they take on the deposed AFCON champions, the Ivory Coast, at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium. Steve Clarke’s men were booed off after losing 1-0 to Japan at Hampden on Saturday in the first of four friendlies leading up to this summer’s finals, where Scotland will be competing for the first time since 1998.
The Ivory Coast , in contrast, head to Merseyside on the back of a 4-0 demolition of fellow World Cup finalists South Korea in Milton Keynes over the weekend. The Elephants may have surrendered their AFCON title in January, but they enjoyed a superb World Cup qualifying campaign and, at 35th in the world, are five spots above Scotland in the FIFA rankings.
We think the match will be a close one and our prediction is a score draw @10/3.

Playing their first match since November’s thrilling 4-2 win over Denmark, which secured a long-awaited return to the World Cup , Scotland suffered a disappointing night against the Japanese . Scott McTominay saw his shot turned on to the post early on, but it was Japan who snatched victory thanks to Junya Ito’s late strike, with Scotland booed off by a section of their fans at the full-time whistle.
Clarke said of the reaction: “It was disappointing. It’s just the modern way. It seems to be if you lose a game, you get booed, you just have to deal with it.” Scotland will hope for better in the first international match to be played at Hill Dickinson Stadium, and you can get odds of 23/10 for them to claim victory.
You can also get 45/1 for ex- Manchester United midfielder McTominay to score the only goal of the game on his return to the north-west of England . However, we think the game will end in a low-scoring draw, and we’re going for 1-1 @5/1.
Ivory Coast Form Guide
The Ivory Coast are heading to the World Cup for the first time since 2014 after a hugely impressive qualifying campaign. They won eight of their 10 matches without conceding a single goal, and took a particular liking to the Seychelles with 9-0 and 7-0 victories over Group F’s poorest team.
The Elephants were unable to follow that up with a successful defence of their Africa Cup of Nations title earlier this year, however, suffering a quarter-final exit at the hands of Egypt following a 3-2 loss.
Key man Amad Diallo scored three of his side’s 10 goals in the tournament, and the Manchester United winger, who started on the bench against South Korea , is 9/4 to net tomorrow. On-loan Crystal Palace forward Evann Guessand scored the opening goal at Stadium MK, and he is 6/1 to repeat the feat against Scotland .
