Ireland head into this game on Thursday after an emotional few days for this Irish team, which has drawn contention and debate far beyond football. Victory over Israel took Heimir Hallgrímsson's record to 10 victories from his 23 matches in charge for a win-rate of 43.5%. Remarkably, that is the third most-winning individual tenure of any Ireland manager to take charge of 20+ games, only bettered by Brian Kerr (03-05) with a win-rate of 54.5% and Jack Charlton (1986-1996) with 50%.
From a footballing perspective, the 3-0 victory over Israel on Sunday night after goals from Troy Parrott , Adam Idah and Jack Moylan was arguably the team’s second-best of this managerial regime and their best since the win over Portugal last November. Given the loaded nature of the fixture, it’ll be interesting to see if this can now be done consistently or if the team was riding a wave of emotion as previously.
Ahead of this game, Bosun Lawal and Josh Keeley have joined up with the squad, though both are unlikely to feature in this match.
