Arsenal will be hoping history repeats itself as they make a surprisingly elusive FA Cup quarter-final appearance this weekend, with Championship side Southampton the opposition. The Gunners have won the FA Cup more times than any other club, but this is only the sixth time in 13 years they have managed to progress beyond the fourth round of the world’s oldest knockout competition.

Southampton v Arsenal – FA Cup 25/26

However, on four of those occasions they would go on to lift the FA Cup in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2020 and having lost the Carabao Cup final last month, they will be desperate to get their hands on the trophy again. First, they need to overcome Southampton in a clash that will evoke memories of the 2003 final, which Arsenal won 1-0 thanks to a Robert Pires goal at the Millennium Stadium.

A trip to St Mary’s won’t be easy. Southampton have lost just three of 20 home games this season, but we’re expecting a Gunners success and our prediction is for them to qualify in normal time @2/7.

Form Guides

Southampton Form Guide

Southampton fans have been put through the wringer during their FA Cup adventure, with Saints surviving a Doncaster fightback to claim a 3-2 third-round win before needing extra time to edge past Leicester 2-1 in round four. Extra time also looked on the cards in the fifth round, only for Ross Stewart to slot home a stoppage-time penalty to sink Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Now FA Cup favourites Arsenal head to St Mary’s in a repeat of the 2021 third-round meeting, which Southampton won 1-0 thanks to a Gabriel own goal. Saints would love a repeat, and you can get 12/1 for them to win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1, which seems the likeliest outcome in the case of an upset. Otherwise, Saints to win either half @16/5 could be a decent option.

Arsenal Form Guide

Arsenal have had plenty of time to digest their Carabao Cup fina l loss to Manchester City before the international break, but also to stew on it. The 2-0 defeat at Wembley means the Gunners have still only won one major honour in seven years under Mikel Arteta, the 2020 FA Cup, and the pressure is sure to ramp up over the coming weeks as the Londoners look to keep alive their surviving treble bid.

The Gunners are nine points clear at the Premier League summit and have favourable-looking quarter-final draws in the Champions League ( Sporting Lisbon ) and FA Cup ( Southampton ), but any slip-ups now could prove terminal. Arsenal had 11 players pull out of international duty over the last week, and it remains to be seen how many will be missing this weekend, but we still think Arteta’s side will be too strong for Saints, and a 3-0, 3-1 or 3-2 win is 7/2.

One player who did represent his country is Viktor Gyokeres , and his confidence should be sky-high after scoring four times in the wins over Ukraine (3-1) and Poland (3-2) that booked Sweden’s spot in the World Cup. Gyokeres is 10/3 to net first on Saturday or 20/23 to score at any time, the same odds as Gabriel Jesus, and we think the 27-year-old is a good bet to get on the scoresheet.
