Vale were promoted in 2024-25 after finishing runners-up in League Two , but look certain to be heading back to the fourth tier after just one season. Last weekend’s 4-0 drubbing at Wycombe was their 21st league defeat of the season, and although they have two games in hand on 20th-placed Blackpool , survival looks highly unlikely.

In a largely miserable season, though, the FA Cup has been a ray of light for the Valiants . They saw off Maldon & Tiptree , Bristol Rovers and Fleetwood before stunning Championship side Bristol City in the fourth round thanks to Ben Waine’s extra-time winner. Waine then scored the only goal of the game as Vale dumped out Premier League Sunderland to reach the last eight. All of Vale’s FA Cup matches so far have been at Vale Park , so the trip to Stamford Bridge will provide a different challenge for the Staffordshire outfit, for whom history is heavily against them. They have played at the Bridge seven times and lost on six of them, including a 7-0 mauling, although they did manage to escape with a 3-3 from their last visit, back in 1929.
