England have one more chance to find some rhythm prior to their World Cup campaign when facing Costa Rica in Orlando on Wednesday. With main Group L rivals Croatia next up in a week’s time, the Three Lions really could do with stepping up on the form shown in three laboured friendly performances this year.
Thomas Tuchel is again expected to make plenty of changes throughout this fixture, but the pressure is on all of his players to impress. That makes a BOYLE Sports price boost of 5/4 for the Three Lions to win both halves a solid option for our first England vs Costa Rica prediction.

Costa Rica famously clinched top spot in a 2014 World Cup group by holding England to a goalless draw in Belo Horizonte, but the Three Lions did gain some revenge for that early exit via a 2-0 friendly win four years later, when Marcus Rashford and Danny Welbeck netted at Elland Road.

Following March’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay and 1-0 loss to Japan , England did at least return to winning ways when beating New Zealand 1-0 in Tampa on Saturday. Harry Kane brilliantly steered home Djed Spence’s cross in first-half stoppage-time, but Tuchel clearly wanted his team to make more of an impression at this point. “I’m OK with it,” he said. “I’m not super happy about it. I liked the second half more than the first half.”
Tuchel , as planned, switched the entire team in Tampa at the break and had some words of encouragement for those players who featured in a scoreless second period. The German added: “I think we had more bite in the second half, were more aggressive on and off the ball, created a bit more. Some good half-chances and some good penetrations into the box.”
Having criticised the first-half display for being “a bit too much freestyle”, we’re anticipating a more focused early showing in Orlando , so another price boost of 13/2 for England to score more than 2.5 goals before the interval is a value bet.
Costa Rica Form Guide
Following three straight World Cup appearances, Costa Rica could manage only third place in their qualifying pool this time around , trailing Haiti and Honduras after being restricted to one win and four draws from six matches.
Argentine coach Fernando Batista took over at the helm in February but has so far failed to inspire an upturn in fortunes. Los Ticos drew 2-2 with Jordan in his opening game and were then thrashed 5-0 by Iran. A 3-1 loss to Colombia at the start of this month was not without some merit but this looks like a very limited Costa Rica squad compared to the glory days of Keylor Navas and Joel Campbell.
After scoring his 79th England goal against New Zealand , Kane declared: “You know what I’m like. I want to be on the scoresheet as much as possible.” The skipper is 9/4 to net first again in Orlando and added: “Playing for England is my favourite thing to do. I wear the shirt with immense pride.”
