Ipswich are expected to put the loss of hugely successful manager Kieran McKenna behind them and finish top of the three promoted clubs in the Premier League this season.

McKenna led the Tractor Boys to three promotions in four years, including a return to the top flight last term, but decided to step down this summer, with Gary O’Neil taking his place.

Top Promoted Club - Premier League 2026-27

Ipswich struggled during their last stint in the Premier League but are favourites with BOYLE Sports to finish above Coventry and Hull in the 2026-27 season.

Here we take a closer look at who will be the top promoted club in the Premier League .

Ipswich

Ipswich @ 11/8

Town secured a return to the Premier League after beating QPR 3-0 on the final day last term to finish runners-up behind Coventry , just one point ahead of Millwall . Ipswich only lost three league games in 2026 but were left sweating for automatic promotion after running out of steam in the final stretch.

It was the second time in three seasons the Tractor Boys had finished runners-up in the Championship under McKenna , and they will hope to have learnt from their last Premier League campaign, when they finished 19th with just four wins and 22 points to their credit.

Unlike McKenna in 2024-25, 43-year-old O’Neil has a decent amount of top-flight management experience, having been in charge of Bournemouth and Wolves in the Premier League and Strasbourg in Ligue 1 , and he will look to draw on that this season.

Coventry

Coventry @ 6/4

Coventry secured their long-awaited return to the Premier League in impressive fashion under Frank Lampard , finishing 11 points clear of the chasing pack while also scoring the most goals (97) and conceding the fewest (45). That saw the Sky Blues end a 25-year wait to return to their once-traditional place in the top flight, where they played from 1967 until relegation in 2001.

Coventry , whose Premier League opener is away to champions Arsenal , had slumped to League Two as recently as 2018 but have worked their way back up the pyramid to finally reach the promised land once again.

Whether then can stay there remains to be seen - both Coventry and Ipswich are 4/6 to come straight back down - and history suggests it will be a struggle for all three newcomers. Since the Premier League was reduced to 20 teams in 1995, around 50% of all promoted clubs have been relegated after just one campaign, although Sunderland and Leeds bucked the trend last term.

Hull

Hull @ 5/2

Hull are 6/5 favourites to finish bottom but they actually have much more Premier League experience than either Coventry or Ipswich over the past two decades, spending five seasons in the top flight. However, much of that time was spent fighting relegation as they finished 17th, 19th, 16th, 18th and 18th between 2008 and 2017, and had dropped down to League One in 2020.

The Tigers secured promotion this time through the play-offs, as they did in 2008 and 2016, thanks to Oli McBurnie’s stoppage-time winner against Middlesbrough at Wembley . That came after Sergej Jakirovic’s side had finished sixth in the Championship table, seven points behind fifth-placed Boro .
