Double winners Bayern Munich face Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup this weekend as the new German season is ushered in with a mouthwatering ‘ Der Klassiker ’ showdown.
This is the first time in five years these two have met in the Supercup due to Dortmund’s relative struggles in recent times, but before then it was virtually an annual occurrence. Between 2012 and 2021, there were eight Klassiker meetings in the Supercup , with Bayern winning five times and Dortmund three.
Holders Bayern are 4/11 clear favourites to lift the trophy this time too but Dortmund can take hope from the fact those 2013, 2014 and 2019 victories all came at their Signal Iduna Park home - the venue for Saturday’s clash.
