We have an Ajax v Shelbourne prediction for you plus a breakdown of Thursday’s Europa Conference League qualifier!

European heavyweights Ajax may not be considered the team they were only a few seasons ago, but still head into this tie as heavy favourites and justifiably so.

Shelbourne have not yet performed to the standards expected of them in 2026, and new manager John Russell has a big task on his hands to avoid embarrassment in this European tie.

Form Guides

Ajax’s Form

It’s been a tough few seasons at Ajax . After dominating from the 2018/19 season and the 2021/22 season, where they won 3 titles in a row as well as being consistent performers in Europe, their stock has certainly fallen, last season only finishing fifth in their domestic league.

With every summer comes a renewed sense of hope, and the appointment of Michel, who last worked with Girona , at the very least looks to be a solid tactical fit. However, after a 3-1 defeat to Panathinaikos at the beginning of July, they’re unbeaten across friendly matches and European qualifying with six wins and one draw.

Though not the strongest of Ajax squads in recent history, they retain quality and the signings of Henrique , Blind and Leonardo should all be worthwhile additions to a group which already has Godts , Gloukh and Brandt .

Shelbourne’s Form

Shelbourne have had a difficult 2026 season, which culminated in the departure of Joey O’Brien as manager on the 25th of June. John Russell has since been appointed as his replacement, but with 11 games remaining, they find themselves fifth in the Premier Division and are in for a fight if they want to be back in Europe for 2027.

Following the change of management, the club’s form hasn’t really found the quintessential managerial “bounce”. They were knocked out of the FAI Cup on penalties to Kerry FC and made hard work of their European qualifying tie in the last round, only winning 6-4 on aggregate against Nõmme Kalju FC, losing the second leg.

This may not be a Shelbourne side firing on cylinders, but they’ve characters like Gannon and Barrett , Henry-Francis is a class act at best, and Moore has the pace to hurt Ajax . But a lot of things will need to go their way if they’re to be competitive.

Players To Watch

Key Players To Watch

Marcos Leonardo -Ajax

The former Brazil Underage International (23) arrived at the club from Al-Hilal this summer with a strong reputation, having scored 47 times across just 79 games for the club. He’s started well already too, scoring in their win over FC Volendam, and his potency in front of goal means he’s a very likely goalscorer again on Thursday.

Sean Moore- Shelbourne

Capped at underage level for both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland , Moore (20) returned to the island following a two-year stint with West Ham United in July 2025 with a big reputation. While he was put on ice for 12 months, his recent performance under new boss John Russell suggests he may have found the manager he needed.

Prediction & Best Bet

Ajax vs Shelbourne Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Ajax 3-0 Shelbourne

Ajax are comfortable favourites, and with good reason; the standard and scale they’re operating on should be a different level altogether.

Shelbourne have quality in their ranks, but whether it’s enough to hurt Ajax, as well as keeping them quiet, will be a tall task.

I’m not expecting a drubbing by any means, but Ajax should have far too much quality.
