CMAT boosts Irish challenge at awards bash
There will be a strong Irish challenge at this year’s Mercury Prize ceremony with Fontaines D.C. priced up at 2/1 by BOYLE Sports for their latest record Romance .
The Dublin rockers are no strangers to Mercury recognition having been nominated for their debut album Dogrel , but they’re seen as major contenders to scoop the award this time round as they lie second on the list of most likely winners according to the odds.
Joining them in the top tier of the market is 4/1 third favourite CMAT, who boosts the Irish challenge at this year’s bash for her highly acclaimed third album Euro-Country.
Other notable nominations include former winners Pulp (11/2) and Wolf Alice (7/1), while 84-year-old folk singer Martin Carthy (14/1) becomes the oldest artist to be nominated for the coveted award.
The act they all have to beat according to the betting is Tynesider Sam Fender (6/4), who won’t have far to travel as the event leaves London for the first time to be staged in Newcastle.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said:
“Sam Fender has home advantage this year, but Fontaines and CMAT are attracting plenty of buzz and the odds suggest this is the best chance yet of an Irish victory.”
