Idrissa Gueye saw red in more ways than one when sent off for slapping team-mate Michael Keane early on in Everton’s win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The altercation occurred after a mix-up in defence, with Gueye raising his left hand after being pushed away by Keane.

Here, we take a look back at other famous on-field football fights between teammates:

Graeme Le Saux & David Batty (Blackburn)

Le Saux was left with a painful reminder of his bust-up with Batty during Blackburn’s 3-0 Champions League defeat at Spartak Moscow in November 1995.

Four minutes into the game, Batty made his displeasure abundantly clear when the pair collided as they tried to retrieve a Mike Newell pass.

The row descended into a pushing match before Le Saux struck out, breaking his left hand during a scuffle in which skipper Tim Sherwood took a blow to the cheek.

Lee Bowyer & Kieron Dyer (Newcastle)

The Magpies duo came to blows towards the end of a 3-0 home defeat by Aston Villa in April 2005.

Dyer grabbed Bowyer by the throat, and they traded punches before being separated by Villa’s Gareth Barry.

Both men were dismissed by referee Barry Knight and later hauled before the media by manager Graeme Souness to apologise for their conduct.

Bruce Grobbelaar & Steve McManaman (Liverpool)

Fiery character Grobbelaar was not afraid of letting his emotions show during matches, and a 21-year-old McManaman felt the goalkeeper’s wrath after a weak clearance from a corner gave Mark Ward the chance to put Everton 2-0 up against the Reds at Goodison Park.

The Zimbabwean gave out a severe dressing down and followed up a furious rant by pushing McManaman under his chin.

McManaman didn’t exactly back down, though, and retaliated with a slap to the face - before wisely heading off for the restart.

Hugo Lloris & Son Heung-Min (Tottenham)

Spurs goalkeeper Lloris and forward Son became involved in a heated row on the pitch as the half-time whistle sounded in a 1-0 Premier League victory over Everton in July 2020.

Lloris angrily confronted the South Korea international over his failure to track back, and the pair had to be separated by Giovani Lo Celso and Harry Winks.

The spat continued down the tunnel and into the dressing room, although the two men embraced after the final whistle.

Emmanuel Adebayor & Nicklas Bendtner (Arsenal)

Adebayor came off the bench with the Gunners struggling in a League Cup semi-final second-leg clash against arch-rivals Tottenham and soon pulled a goal back to make it 4-1.

However, his mood turned sour when failing to receive a pass from Bendtner, who claimed that an exchange of words was followed by Adebayor headbutting him on the nose.

William Gallas intervened before the fracas could develop further, and although the incident was investigated by the Football Association, no further action was taken.

Ricardo Fuller & Andy Griffin (Stoke)

Potters striker Fuller was sent off for slapping his captain in a 2-1 defeat at West Ham in December 2008.

The flashpoint came as Stoke waited to kick off after Carlton Cole held off Griffin to claim the Hammers’ equaliser.

Fuller, who accused Griffin of being “very rude and disrespectful”, received a three-match ban, with City boss Tony Pulis calling a team meeting to address the incident.

Craig Levein & Graeme Hogg (Hearts)

The Hearts duo became involved in a disagreement during a pre-season friendly at Raith in August 1994 after their side had almost conceded.

Both men threw punches, but it was Levein’s which did the damage, breaking Hogg’s nose.

Hogg was sent off as he was carried off on a stretcher, with Levein suffering the same fate. They were later handed 10 and 12-match bans, respectively.

Jermaine Beckford & Eoin Doyle (Preston)

The North End teammates were sent off following an angry exchange with each other during stoppage time in a 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

With Preston chasing a late equaliser against the Owls, down to nine men themselves due to a dismissal and an injury, the pair squared up after Beckford took exception to Doyle preferring to pass to Marnick Vermijl, who fired over the bar.

Manager Simon Grayson fumed: "Absolute childish behaviour from the pair of them has cost us ultimately a point out of this game, potentially three. They've let a lot of people down.”

Stuart McCall & Andy Myers (Bradford)

With the Bantams 5-1 down against Yorkshire rivals Leeds at Elland Road, a heated argument between captain McCall and Myers quickly spiralled out of control.

McCall reportedly headbutted his team-mate, who allegedly hit back with a punch, which left a deep cut under the Scot’s eye that later needed stitches.

However, the incident was missed by officials, no video footage was available, and Myers simply commented: "It was nothing and we are still the best of mates. There was a lot of pride at stake, and we were just frustrated."

Derek Hales & Mike Flanagan (Charlton)

Strike partners Hales and Flanagan came to blows during Charlton’s FA Cup tie against Maidstone in January 1979.

The source of the spat was allegedly Flanagan reacting to Hales' failing to pass to him by making a disparaging remark about his team-mate’s genitals. Both were sent off.
