What is the FAI Cup?

The 2023 Sports Direct FAI Cup will be the 103rd edition of the Republic of Ireland's figure-head national cup competition. The competitions features teams from the League of Ireland Premier Division and the First Division, as well as non-league teams qualifying for this year’s event competition having already taken place back in April.

What's Up For Grabs In This Year's FAI Cup?

The winner of the 2023 FAI Cup will earn automatic qualification for the 2024–25 UEFA Europa Conference League.  The 2023 competition has 40 teams taking part 20 from the League of Ireland and 20 teams from the regional leagues of the Republic of Ireland football league system.

Shamrock Rovers are the most successful side in the competition’s history with 25 successes in the competition with their most recent one coming in 2019.

Bohemians – 7/4

Declan Devine is doing an excellent job at Bohemians and while European qualification through the league is possible, their best chance remains an FAI Cup victory.Bohemians are the third most successful side in the competition's history with 7 wins and 8 runners-up finishes. However, they haven’t won the competition since 2008 with their closest result being when they lost to St Patrick’s Athletic on penalties in 2021's final.

St Patrick’s Athletic – 7/4

Joint-favourites for the competition are St Patrick’s Athletic who have recovered from their poor early season form which resulted in the sacking of Tim Clancy and the eventual promotion of former Rangers striker Jon Daly as the new Head Coach.They last won the competition in 2021 when they beat Bohemians 4-3 on penalties after the game had finished 1-1 AET. However, they had a poor result last year being knocked out at the first round stage by First Division side Waterford 2-3

First Division Champions Galway have one more task this season win the FAI Cup, and albeit a tall task with them the only First Division side remaining, their 4-1 victory over Dundalk in the Semi-Final proves it would be foolish to underestimate the Tribesman.Galway last won the competition back during the 1990-91 season where they defeated Shamrock Rovers 1-0 in the final.

It’s been a strange season on Leeside, their Premier Division status remains very precarious and will likely boil down to a relegation/play-off game in the coming weeks against a First Division outfit.However, the FAI Cup which has often been kind to the club has been a source of comfort for the club this season and following three First Division draws they find themselves in a Semi-Final with a puncher's chance of success and European Football next year.
