Third Time Lucky For Man City?

Manchester City may have suffered surprise defeats in the last two finals, but it is hard to look beyond them at 9/2 to prevail when assessing this season's early FA Cup outright winner odds.

Crystal Palace caused a big upset by beating Pep Guardiola's side 1-0 at Wembley in May, 12 months after the Blues had been edged out 2-1 by neighbours United.

However, City did lift the trophy for a seventh time in 2023 when seeing off the Red Devils by the same scoreline and Guardiola's overall record in this competition is outstanding.

The Spaniard also triumphed in 2019 thanks to a 6-0 demolition of Watford and has reached three other semi-finals, only losing out to top-class opposition in Arsenal (twice) and Liverpool.

Guardiola's incredible stats in FA Cup matches speak for themselves, with 36 games won, one drawn and six lost. His teams have scored 122 goals in those fixtures and conceded just 23.

City weren't at their best in last season's decider but will still feel aggrieved that Dean Henderson was not shown a red card when deliberately handling outside his area.

That decision proved pivotal when Henderson later saved Omar Marmoush's penalty and kept out efforts from Erling Haaland, Josko Gvardiol, Jeremy Doku and Claudio Echeverri in a superb display.

It was the first time Guardiola had failed to lift any significant silverware since his maiden campaign at Etihad Stadium, which was the only other trophy-less season in his managerial career, so beware the backlash!

Each-way Fancy

Seagulls boss Hurzeler looks up for the cup

Palace bucked the trend by becoming only the second team outside of the so-called big six to lift the trophy in the last dozen years, the other being Leicester in 2021, so some punters will again look for value in the FA Cup outright winner odds.

The Eagles are 33/1 to strike again, while Newcastle got a taste for silverware with last season's EFL Cup success and are 9/1 to now triumph in this competition for the first time since 1955.

However, we're putting Brighton at the top of our each-way list at 25/1.

Young boss Fabian Hurzeler created a big impression by leading Albion to eighth place in the Premier League in his first season in charge and there were also some positive signs that he will take the knockout tournaments seriously.

The Seagulls got through two rounds of the EFL Cup before only falling 3-2 to Liverpool.

In the FA Cup, Brighton kicked off with a cracking 4-0 victory at Norwich and then got past high-class opposition in Chelsea and Newcastle, prevailing 2-1 in extra time at St James' Park in round five.

Albion were the better team in a goalless quarter-final draw with Nottingham Forest but went out on penalties as their opponents won a third straight FA Cup shoot-out.

It is over 40 years since Brighton last reached the final, when they should really have upset Manchester United, but everything is in place for a good run this term.
